Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a sound catalogued entry of 304 head of predominantly beef bred sorts from noted producers from across Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria and The Scottish Borders.

With lowland lambing’s coming to an end and hill flocks just embarking on the same annual undertaking a rather mixed show was presented from all quarters with a number of regular purchasers missing from the ringside as the weeks poor weather hampered almost all livestock and tillage operations.

With a fair spread of both continental cross and native breed cattle across all age brackets all classes sold well and in-line with recent trades to average £1436 throughout with steers peaking at £2180 and levelling at £1483 whilst heifers scaled to £1980 and returned at £1324 for the entire entry.

The sale was topped for the second week by The Walker Family, Houselope Grange, Tow Law, County Durham with yet another stunning Blonde cross steer with trademark shape and style that soared to £2180 and with a Limmy at £1930 and a heifer at £1880 the family sold four to average £1957 on a another good trip to Hexham.

The heifer trade peaked at £1980 for a smashing Black Limmy cross heifer bred from the noted dairy lines of The Robinson Family, West Cocklaw.  This one had scope and growth in spades and will no doubt go on to make a suckler cow replacement as her worthy destiny. Nicholas Robinson sold ten well bred Limmy cross females on the day to average a notable £1518 throughout.

Native breeds were once again to the fore and topped at £2020 for a huge Angus from Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms who, with another at a straight £2000 sold five to average £1962 for a great pen of bullocks all by Rawburn sires. Not to be outdone The Hereford was also in the ascendancy at Messrs Eggleston, Thornham Hill rang the bell with their best steer at £1980 and averaged a very similar £1956 for three sold on the day.

Cattle in the middle age bracket of 11-17 months were also good sell peaking at £1840 for a Charolais cross steer from Messrs Walker Bros, Satley; £1670 for an Angus from Messrs Hall, East Butsfield and £1600 for a cracking shaped Limmy bullock from The Collingwoods of Intake Farm, Weardale. Heifers in this class topped at £1640 for a smashing Limmy cross from The Rutherfords of Kingswood, Whitfield and at £1570 for a similar sort from James Macgregor, Loanend, Berwick.

During the sale proceedings were halted to wish long-standing Mart Foreman and Hexham Mart Stalwart Mr Roy Coe best wishes on his 90th Birthday and saw him presented with a huge cake from the canteen staff and receive a verse of ‘Happy Birthday’ from colleagues, friends and customers gathered in the cattle ring.  The entire company wishes Roy well on this landmark birthday and extends grateful thanks for his years of dedicated service.

As the season approaches turnout the auctioneers are actively seeking cattle for the weekly sales and special prize shows.  Entries are invited for next weeks dedicated native breed sale and should be directed to Chris Armstrong on 07808 721957 or Drew Patrick on 07854 361967 or be lodged with the main office by 12 noon on Monday – call 01434 605444.
