Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their final sale of store cattle in the month of April offered a good catalogue of 450 predominantly beef bred sorts from across Northumberland, County Durham & Cumbria to a good but not full ringside of buyers.

With turnout imminent and temperatures slightly more conducive to growing grass mood at the ringside was distinctly ‘lighter’ than of late and this, combined with a better show of quality on the week resulted in a lift for all classes.

Trade peaked at £2040 for the lead bullock from a stupendous pen of quality cattle from Melvyn, Celia, Kevin & Steven Ridley. In a change of policy the noted stock rearing family from Shitlington Hall in The North Tyne are now opting to consign cattle for sale at the younger age of 14/15 months and as a result enjoyed a great trade throughout – six bullocks averaging £1916 and six heifer sisters topping at £1980 – the dearest heifer on the day, to average £1836 and cap another great trip to the Hexham ring for the Ridleys.

Yet again Angus cattle figured highly and topped at £2000 for a thumper of a bullock from Philip & Robert Tomlinson, Sunniside, Consett with another from Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms cashing at £1980.

Hereford bullocks travelled to £1960 for a cracking example from Shaw Eggleston, Thornham Hill whilst Angus heifers topped at £1920 from John Carpenter, Rare Dene to cement native breeds in the upper echelons here at Hexham once again.

With the renowned May sales rapidly approaching focus did shift on this day towards the cattle in the middle age bracket and those ideal for turnout. It was this class that saw the biggest lift and many made mention of the rise compared with those sold earlier in the year.

Highlights came from many noted purveyors and included Limmy bullocks to £1790 from Willie & Mark Longlands, Rusheylaw; £1780 for a similar pair from Richard & Chris Thornton, Cornhills; £1770 for another well-bred type from Arthur & Richard Storrow, Willimoteswick and a cracking Angus bullock at the same age from Richard Walton, Linacres at £1760.

The youngest class; those at ten months and below also saw a considerable rise on the week.  These peaked for a great pen of Angus cattle at £1540 for a super bullock bred by John Nevin, Parkside, Allendale who sold another at £1460 also. Limmy bullocks at this age peaked at £1450 from Cornhills with another at £1410 from Messrs Wood, Low Acton and heifers selling to £1350 also from Cornhills.

The auctioneers are encouraged by this upturn and are actively seeking entries for next weeks ‘May Prize Show & Sale’ and the following ‘May Term Sale’ on the 10th of the month.  If you have cattle to sell and wish to maximise your return then kindly contact our auctioneers Chris Armstrong on 07808 721957 or Drew Patrick on 07854 361967 who will be delighted to discuss trade and the potential values of your stock through the store cattle ring here at Hexham.
