Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern marts held its annual May show and sale of 869 store cattle and suckled calves. An increased entry on the year and what an entry to boot. Credit must go to all vendors for an outstanding show of cattle from start to finish. The pre-sale show was very ably judged by Mr Jonathan Beresford, Skipton and kindly sponsored once again by Stoneacre Motor Group.

At the conclusion of the show, Mr Beresford chose the Limousin cross heifer class winner from Messrs Athey, High Lovelady Shield as his champion and then placed the second prized Limousin cross heifer as his reserve from Messrs P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope.

The sale as usual started with the older cattle and again a great trade was witnessed for a terrific show of cattle. Trade for all classes across the board was strong and a touch sharper with an eager crowd of purchasers from as far north as Aberdeen down to Wales, Hereford and Leicestershire ensuring a competitive trade for all classes.

The sale of store cattle went on to average a healthy £1480.11 leaving steers to average £1540.76 and heifers to level at £1439.60. Leading the sale at £2550.00 was an outstanding red roan heifer from the annual consignment of Messrs Rochester & Murray, Glebe Farm. Not far behind was the Reserve Champion from Messrs P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope with their stylish red Limousin heifer which went on to sell for £2500.00 and will be out on this years show circuit.

Two lots went on to realise £2400.00, firstly an outstanding pair of black Limousin cross heifers from Messrs J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters and following that was the overall show champion from Messrs GW & C Athey & Son, High Lovelady Shield.

Dominating the days steer trade was the outstanding run of Charolais and Limousin bred cattle from Messrs J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters which peaked at £2200.00 for Limousin crosses and £2160.00 for Charolais crosses. The terrific run of twenty-nine steers and heifers from Great Chesters went on to level at an eye watering £2072.41.

Angus bred cattle once again in serious demand and sold to a high of £2080.00 for a steer from Mr H D Hutchinson, Hollins close. There are many more that could have been mentioned with twenty-two other cattle breaking the two-thousand-pound barrier, thus cementing Hexham’s place as the leading centre in the North of England for forward store cattle.

An exceptional show of middle aged cattle was seen today with far too many to mention but some of the highlights included the annual consignment of forty well bred Limousin and British Blue cross steers and heifers from Messrs Rochester & Murray, Glebe Farm which peaked at £2550.00 for heifers as previously mentioned and £1900.00 for steers leveling at £1632.35 for run of yearling cattle.

Messrs J Thompson & Sons, Springwell Cottage brought their usual run of quality from the top of Tow Law selling their run of Limousin cross steers to £1910.00 and to average at £1667.50.

Weanling Section

With grass now starting to shift, trade for the weanling section rose again with more “would be” purchasers ringside, creating an increased demand. Weaned steers went on to average a tremendous average of £1419.05 with a small entry of heifers averaging £1166.88. Leading the section at £1680.00 was monster ten-month-old Limousin steer from the Thornton team from Cornhills.

Topping the heifer section with a ten-month-old Limousin heifer was Messrs J Lee & Sons, Morley Hill selling to £1360.00.

Young Bulls

With increasing number of bulls being sold now through the Hexham ring, an extremely competitive trade was observed, contrary to some beliefs, Hexham is a place where bulls can be sold. Messrs H Annett & Son, Widdrington Farm took full advantage of this selling thirteen month old Limousin crosses to £1870.00 and Messrs Curry, Low Burradon selling eleven month old  Charolais bulls £1710.00.

More bulls can easily be sold in this centre and we require more on a weekly basis.

Next week is our traditional “May Term” sale and we are actively seeking entries for Tuesdays (Due to Bank Holiday Monday) catalogue. Please call Auctioneers over the weekend Drew Patrick 07854361967 or Chris Armstrong 07808721957 or the office on Tuesday morning on 01434 605444.
