Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 427 store cattle and suckled calves which this week, included the special monthly sale for native bred cattle. Albeit “native week”, there was a great entry of both native and continental cattle this week from across the north of England and southwest of Scotland.
Trade throughout once again was firm but a noticeable lift in trade for Angus cross cattle. This was evident in the top prices this week. Sharing top spot this week and selling to £2000.00 was a steer firstly from Messrs G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside and then soon after, a heifer from Mr K Hall, West Butsfield achieved the same outcome.
Messrs G & E A Herdman, Lunns House brought their weekly entry of quality bred Limousin bred cattle, this week selling four steers to top at £1900.00 and to average £1847.50 all to repeat customers.
A very mixed entry of younger cattle forward this week with all shapes and sizes presented. As poor weather continues to hamper turnout, customers for grazing cattle are still slightly limited but this didn’t affect trade today which would be firmer, possibly slightly sharper for younger cattle. A noticeable lift was seen though for the better end of beasts, both native and continental bred.
A great packet of four, thirteen-month-old Hereford cross steers from Mr A Parker, High Wooley went on to cash at £1470.00. Whilst Angus cross steers of the same age peaked at £1580.00 from Mr K Hall, West Butsfield.
Again proving a late turn at Hexham doesn’t hinder trade was a run of weaned and yearling Limousin cross steers and heifers from Messrs T Hutchinson & Sons, Lee Hall Farm which sold ten month old Heifers to £1510.00 and steers of the same age to £1360.00.
Messrs J Browell & Sons, Quarry House also took a later turn this week and had a flying trade, selling eleven-month-old Limousin cross steers to £1610.00.

A select entry of ewes and lambs sold to another strong trade with hopefully some warmth and sunshine on the horizon, topping at £149 per life, for outfits with strong Texel x lambs at foot.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 481 store hoggs, selling to another strong trade for a show reflecting the time of year and the weather.
Topping at £224 were a pen of 6 thumping tup hoggs from Mr A W Dixon, West Heddon.
Suffolk x hoggs topped at £198 from Messrs N & A Hunter, Woodlands Hall.
Cheviot mules topped at £160 from Messrs B & S Teasdale & Son, Lynesack Farm.
