Store Cattle & Store Sheep
Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its first store sale of April and first back after the Easter break with a catalogued entry of 413 Store Cattle & Suckled Calves. Older cattle met a great trade once again in this centre and certainly didn’t see any reduction in values compared to other outlets. Dairy bred, factory type cattle were exceptionally well sold and in great demand with cattle from across the Northumberland, Cumbria, Durham, North Yorkshire and Scottish Borders taking full advantage of the Hexham store ring.
Stealing the show today was a run of exceptional Blonde cross steers from Messrs P & PM Walker, Houselop Grange which peaked at £2170.00 and went on to average £2052.50. Another regular Hexham support and travelling up the A1 from Knarsborough, North Yorkshire was Mr Ian Thornton, Gibbet House who sold Angus cross steers to £2000.00. Mr Thornton also sold Charolais cross steers from his Hay A Park holding for £1960.00.
The heifer trade was dominated by Moralee Family from Hard Riding with Father John and son Ben showing cattle this week, leaving Jack at home with his waders on lambing sheep. The Moralee’s pen of Limousin cross heifers topped at £1950.00 and another selling to £1800.00.
JHC Campbell & Sons, Thrunton has another successful trip to Hexham selling Pure Angus heifers to £1780.00.
Messrs F Hall & Sons, East Butsfield brought their usual quality of yearling Angus bred cattle selling steers to £1600.00 and £1590.00.
The best of the weaned calves were again in demand with 9 month old Limousin cross steers from Mr JD Walton & Sons, Burnbank selling to £1410.00. Selling at the same price was a magnificent pen of seven Angus cross steers from Messrs CA & J Watmore, Holystone Estate. But as seen across the country, younger, grass type cattle are now being hampered by the prolonged wet weather resulting for a late turn out. Overall there was a varied show forward today, of both native and continental bred weanlings, which saw a slightly reduced demand compared to previous weeks.
A small entry of young bulls forward this week, which sold well for the goods on offer with Limousin crosses from Messrs A R White, Low Staples selling to £1390.00.
