Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 418 store cattle and suckled calves, included in this week’s sale was the monthly special sale for native bred cattle, with 55% of the sale consisting of native bred cattle.

A very mixed show of cattle was observed this week with quality cattle still very easily cashed. Forward cattle once again met a buoyant trade here at Hexham with well fleshed Angus cross steers from Holywell Farms Ltd, Church Farm peaking at £2000.00 and others to £1960.00.

Taking full advantage of the competitive Hexham ring was Mr W Davy, Warton who sold Charolais cross steers to £1960.00 and a pen of three to £1880.00.

Messrs G & EA Herdman, Lunns House brought their usual stamp of quality, selling forward Limousin cross steers to £1880.00. Selling to the same price with a heft Angus cross steer was Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields.

There was a severe shortage of forward heifers this week with the quality on offer also very mixed. Leading the trade for heifers was Mr B Storey, Woodhead with a dairy bred Limousin cross cashing away to £1640.00. Selling to the same return was a thick Angus cross from Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields.

The mid-age range of native bred steers sold very well with 14 month old Angus steers from Mr J Bennison, Warden Law cashing to £1540. Also selling Angus steers of the same age, out of Weardale was Messrs JL & M Wilkinson & Son, Bollihope Shield. Then selling 12 month old Angus steers to £1510.00 was Messrs F Hall & Sons, East Butsfield.

It wasn’t just the natives that took the spoils today in this section, Messrs K & HA Ridley, Allenshields Farm sold 11 month old Limousin cross steers to £1590.00. Messrs G H & A Walton, Farnbury were back once again this week with another great packet of cattle selling 10 month old Limousin steers to £1560.00.

Strong weaned Native calves were in real demand with J C Rutherford, Old Town consigning his usual packet of strong and powerful 10 month old, pure bred Angus steers selling away to £1470.00.

An increasing number of young bulls are now being sold through our ring here at Hexham and taking full advantage of “native week” was Messrs A & D Heyes, New Field Farm whose packet of yearling Hereford bulls sold like hot cakes, peaking at £1185.00.

We are actively seeking cattle of all classes each week to fulfill the current demand. Please don’t hesitate to contact our team of auctioneers with any entries or enquires.
