Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle and offered a sound entry of 393 catalogued head representing another good increase on the year.

With the exceptional quality of the previous weeks show sale dispensed with a distinctly more utilitarian entry of cattle was forward and as such sold to a similarly consistent rate throughout.

The sale peaked at £2080 for a tremendously well-shaped Limousin cross heifer at 20 months of age from noted Brampton based producer Edward Dean, Kirkhouse who also sold 4 other similar although younger types from £1600-1700 to average £1740 for five very well-bred Cumbrian cattle through the Hexham ring.

Steer trade peaked just beneath that figure at £2060 for a superb Limousin from father and son team Roly and Stuart Carr, Little Bavington. The bullock at 16 months displayed great style, shape and growth potential from the renowned pedigree and commercial breeders and their run of 8 steers and 2 heifers levelled at £1565 for the Capheaton cattlemen.

Angus cattle continue to sell well at this centre and peaked at £1990 for a big black bullock from Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms with another following at £1880 from Mark Featherstone, Allendale.

Several consignments of noted yearling calves were presented on this day and again these were well sold and in-line with recent values representing considerable lifts on corresponding trades twelve months earlier.  Messrs Sutherland, Ross Farm, Belford presented their annual run of Simmental cross calves and these peaked at £1460 for steers and £1050 for heifers averaging a worthy £1185 for 42 sold, the majority to return purchasers.

Messrs Robertson, Embleton Mill brought another similar run of coastal bred cattle to Hexham – these being the shapely Limmy cross heifer sisters of the steers sold last week and peaked £1360 for the best in the pen to then return at the same £1185 per head for 30 sold in nine, level, well-matched lots.

Messrs Fawcett, Well House, Harbottle are now noted for the stock they bring from The Coquet Valley to Hexham and regularly see both new and return purchasers on their sale docket and this day was no exception. Limmy steer calves peaked at £1510 and heifers scaled to £1280 whilst Charolais crosses topped at £1380 and £1130 to bolster an average of £1201 for 19 calves sold through the Hexham ring.

The youngest class of cattle; ‘weanlings’ at ten months of age and younger also kept up recent rates and these peaked this week at £1490 for a cracking Angus cross bullock from Rob Campbell, Moor House Gate with a Limmy steer calf from Messrs Wilson, Throstle Nest following at £1470.  These two vendors averaged £1332 and £1319 for eight and ten calves sold respectively.

Entries are invited for the sake next week which will include the monthly special sale of native breed cattle. Entries should be with the Mart Offices on 01434 605444 by noon on Monday.
