Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a catalogued entry of 404 head including older, forward types, yearlings and a nice entry of weanling calves at ten months and younger.

With an improved show of quality throughout and in fairness a largely continental based catalogue as opposed to the monthly native breed sale held last week trade once again held firm buoyed on by several seasonal buyers returning to the ringside as daylight hours and cattle performance increases in direct correlation.

Leading the charge this week was yet another super run of forward cattle from the upscaled enterprise of father and son team Brian and Angus Tailford, Beacon Rigg, Langley. Their lead bullock; a Limousin with typical homebred shape and style but now sold at an older age bracket, hit the ring in great form and quickly rattled up to £2080.  With another at £1960 and a sublime pen of three blacks at £1940 the duo were delighted to level at a well-deserved £1900 for ten sold which included a hefty Angus cross at £1900.

The black breed were still in high demand and had earlier sold to a lead price of £1940 from The Watsons of Holywell and another consignment from local purveyor Geoff Roddam scaled to £1920 and levelled at £1880 for five fine examples sold on the day from alongside the foundation stones of the Roman Wall at Blackcarts, Humshaugh.

Not outclassed on the day was the Charolais breed and regular consignors David and Nick Walker, Satley, Tow Law hit the heights once again with some hefty bullocks that peaked at £1990 and with others at £1960 and £1940 the County Durham cattlemen travelled home South on the ‘68’ with a worthy average of £1851 for 11 belting bullocks to complete a great days trading at Hexham.

Drawing on last week’s success with Cumbrian cattle the auctioneers were delighted to welcome new customers making their first appearance on the catalogue – Jonathan and Janet Wales, noted livestock farmers from Thackwood farm, Raughton Head, Carlisle. The couple brought forward five great cattle east along the A69 and were well-rewarded for their efforts.  Their lead steer was a grand black Limmy bullock with bags of shape that flew to £1960 and was knocked down to a discerning North Yorks based purchaser who promptly stood on for their second to secure the brace of well-bred beast.  A smart Blonde cross heifer completed the quintet and this one changed hands at £1640 much to the delight of Mr & Mrs Wales.

A mixed show of heifers met with a trade that saw a number of highlights but largely looked easier than that seen two weeks previous.  Leading the female rankings was a smashing jet black heifer from Andrew Moralee, Lowfield Farm, Willington that exceeded vendors expectations at the great tariff of £1850.  With other well-bred sorts at £1760 and £1740 the herdmaster from the banks of The River Wear went home ecstatic with an average of £1630 for six heifers sold.

With March fast approaching and entries building towards the special shows and sale being held next week a number of consignments of yearling and younger cattle were traded on this day and sold to great advantage.

Michael and Andrew Gibson, Thornton Towers made the short trip from Newbrough to Hexham with their smart run of Limmy cross calves at 14-15 months and enjoyed a sharp trade topping at £1690 for a great pair of bullocks and £1640 for a super heifer to average £1535 for ten steers and four heifer sisters sold on this day.

John & Steven Yeats, Woodhouse, are longstanding advocates of the British Blue as a suckled calf sire and theirs has been a recipe for success through the Hexham ring for many years. Selling shapely steers to £1780 and heifers to £1480 this father/son team were chuffed to average £1507 for their eight best at 12-14 months comprising five steers and three heifers from their holding high on the tops at Coanwood.

Coquet valley cattle also came to Tyne Green and were marketed with great effect on behalf of Messrs Watmore, Holystone Estate.  With Charolais crosses to £1790 and five Angus bullocks selling to £1600 the upland enterprise realised £1573 for twelve sold throughout at the same 12-14 months of age.

The youngest class of ‘weanling’ calves at ten months and younger once again went on in terms of value with a number of top end calves looking dearer than ever. David Teasdale, Grindon Hill saw the peak of this trade for his exceptional run of well-bred calves that topped at £1730 for a cracking steer. With others at £1640 and £1600 the Haydon Bridge based producer of note levelled at £1445 for 16 calves sold including three smart heifers.

Willie & Mark Longlands, Rusheylaw also hit the heights will their quality breeding and topped at £1690 for their lead bullock. With another pen of three also by the Limmy bull selling to £1610 the Birtley based family sold 11 including three heifers by the Blue bull to average £1455 throughout.

Heifer levels in this class were also bouncing and peaked at £1450 for an exceptionally shaped calf from relatively new herdmaster David Cowan, Shaftoe Moor, Middleton, Morpeth.  Messrs Moore, Highside sold another of their typically well-shaped heifers at £1380 and both the aforementioned Grindon Hill pen and another from Low Ardley included females at £1360.  Messrs Common along with a number of other vendors sold later in the sale with no drawback proving yet again that a later turn on the catalogue is not a bad turn at Hexham.

With the annual highlights of both the March prize show and sale and the Young Farmers Calf Wintering Competition taking place together next Thursday and Friday the auctioneers would welcome entries by noon on Monday 25th February and expressions of interest from potential purchasers at anytime to Chris Armstrong on 07808 721957 or Drew Patrick 07854 361967.
