Store Cattle and Suckled Calves
Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly store sale offered an increased entry on the year of 431 catalogued head of store cattle and suckled calves.
Yet again with a great crowd at ringside a more mixed entry of older cattle followed the recent trade and sold to great levels throughout.
Leading the rankings on this day was a tremendous Angus cross bullock from weekly consignor of the black native breed to this centre Mr Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside, Consett who topped the trade at £1910. This one was followed by a smart and shapely red Limmy cross bullock at £1880 from another family of weekly supporters Messrs Herdman, Lunns House also from the Consett area of County Durham.
At a time when many herdmasters are reducing or dispersing their numbers it was greatly encouraging to see a new store cattle enterprise reap the benefits of the trade attainable through the Hexham ring. With their first consignment of older, forward Angus stores Messrs Atkinson, East Beechfield were rewarded handsomely for the top quality cattle reared at Belsay and saw their offering peak at £1870 and averaging £1678 for six sold.
A useful entry of females were topped at £1780 for a cracking Limmy heifer from Brian and Angus Tailford, Beacon Rigg who sold 9 similar types to average £1633 whilst the Charolais entry peaked at the same figure for a superb example from James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown who sold his annual consignment to average a worthy £1411 for seventeen sold at 13-15 months of age.
Messrs Common, Low Ardley brought forward another trademark run of bullocks that were highly sought after and topped at £1680 to average £1534 for ten cracking three-quarter bred steer calves with bags of shape, style and outlook.
In the same bracket were another belting packet from David Teasdale, Grindon Hill that scaled to £1780 for steers and £1380 for well-bred heifer sisters to cap another successful days trading at Hexham the Haydon Bridge based producers.
The youngest class of cattle also continues to sell well at this centre and saw Limmy steers at ten months to £1600 from James McGregor, Loanend, Berwick on Tweed with heifers at the same age to £1550 from welcome returnee’s Messrs Robinson, West Cocklaw.
Heifers in this class were good to sell with others following at £1500 from Messrs Bell, Woodhall and from Messrs Storrow, Willimoteswick at £1440; both of whom enjoyed yet again sharp returns for their desirable calves. James Pritchard, Evistones, Otterburn topped his run at £1400 For a shapely, red Limmy steer calf and with another at £1360 and a heifer at the same money was pleased with a return of £1235 for six of each sold representing a lift of over £70 per head on the year.
