Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Hexham Store Sale Friday 2nd February

Store Cattle and Suckled Calves

Hexham and Northern Marts held its first weekly sale of February, which consisted of 291 store cattle and suckled calves. The buoyant cattle trade that’s been observed here at Hexham the past few weeks continued today, with all classes once again selling well to very competitive rates.

Store bullocks throughout the sale commanded a handsome average of £1569. The entry of heifers would lack the quality of previous weeks but still sold to a very bonny average of £1347, cementing Hexham’s reputation for achieving excellent rates of return for cattle producers from both sides the border.

The Charolais breed dominated proceedings this week with bullocks selling to £2080.00 for an outstanding specimen from Mr F T Walton, Flotterton and another to £1980.00. Messrs Walker Brothers, Satley brought their usual consignment of forward bullocks, and also sold Charolais x bullocks to £1980.00 and £1960.00 twice.

Leading Limousins this week came from Messrs J A Bousfield & Sons, Low Stokoe who sold strong bullocks to £1980.00 and later in the sale, matching the price was an outstanding black heifer from Graham & Gemma Common, Low Ardley.

Even with it not being a designated native sale week, Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields sold a hefty Angus cross heifer to £1900.00 and others to £1740.00 and £1720.00.

Returning to the Friday ring after a lengthy absence was Messrs G G Baynes & Son, Marley Cote Walls who sold Ayreshire heifers to £980.00 and proving all classes of cattle can be sold through the Hexham ring to competitive rates.

One of the highlights of the day was an outstanding run of yearling Limousin cross bullocks and heifers from Messrs F & M Moore, HIghside who sold bullocks to £1680.00 to a regular Yorkshire based finisher.

Messrs GW & C Athey & Son, High Lovelady Shield brought their usual quality offering of 11–12-month-old Limousin cross steers and heifers which were in high demand and sold to £1530.00 for a yearling bullock. Ten month old heifers from the Alston based family went on to sell for £1490.00.

Leading the weaned calf section this week with a mighty black Limousin cross bullock was W & P F Walton, Penpeugh, which went on to realise £1520.00 at 10 months old.

Making the very successful trip down the A1 from Chathill and taking full advantage of the ringfull of prospective purchasers was Messrs P A Robson, Chathill who saw a considerable rise on earlier efforts this week and sold his well-bred 10 month old Angus cross steers to £1440.00, £1400.00 and £1380.00 and to level at £1306.33 for fifteen sold.
