Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their final sale of store cattle in the month of January and offered 321 catalogued head with trade continuing in the same vein as seen in recent weeks spurred on by a full ringside of buyers gathered promptly for the start of the sale.

The older store cattle and yearling types were yet again a great trade averaging £1398 through which comprised of 121 steers that returned at £1534 with 115 heifers of the same age levelling at £1334.

The sale was topped by an outstanding Limousin cross steer from noted consignor John Davison, Lough green who sold this one at 18 months of age for £2040 and along with three other great examples averaged £1830 throughout.

The female portion of the sale was led by a simply superb pure bred Limousin cross heifer from The Proctor family, Swarland Old Hall which rang the bell for the noted pedigree bull breeders and changed hands at £1940, followed by another at £1870 capping another great day for the family in the store ring at Hexham.

A useful entry of native breed cattle were offered at the start of the sale and these too continue to sell well at this centre.  Leading this trade at £1910 was a great big black bruiser of a bullock by the Angus sire from Phil & Shaun Watson, Holywell Farms who now feature regularly in the top echelons of the native breed trade at Hexham. John Carpenter, Rare Dene sold another at £1860 and with Mark Featherstone, Allendale Farm leading the female Angus’s at £1710 backed up by James Black, East Kildarroch, Newton Stewart following at £1640 the Hexham reputation as the leading centre in The North of England for native breed cattle was well and truly asserted.

Messrs Ogle, Blackburn consigned six great bullocks that topped at £1930 and levelled at £1840; Messrs Robinson, West Cocklaw also cashed six smashing types that scaled to £1960 and averaged £1750 and seven smashing Limmy heifers from The Sparkes of Little Swinburne rose to £1730 and averaged £1527 – highlights were a-plenty and too numerous to mention in their entirety.

The remainder of the sale comprised of weanling type cattle at ten months and younger and these looked as dear as ever averaging £1165 throughout.

This trade was led by another sterling load of cattle from The Waltons of Greyside who traded their well-bred 9-10 month old steers to £1530 and heifers to £1370.  Coupled with yearling types from 12-14 months cashing at respective top prices of £1570 and £1700 the noted Newbrough herdmasters sold seven steers to average £1470 and eleven heifer sisters to level at £1377.

Rates show no signs of easing as we move into February and numbers forward will undoubtedly remain static until nearer the special March sales – if you have cattle that you are contemplating marketing kindly contact our auctioneers Chris Armstrong on 07808 721957 or Drew Patrick on 07854 361967 who will be delighted to advise on attainable values during this period of confidence within the industry.
