Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Hexham Auction Mart
Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly store sale offered a good entry for the time of year of 247 catalogued head of cattle. With all manner of breeds, types and ages presented for sale quality was varied throughout and trade appeared somewhat more erratic than of late. This due perhaps to the significant changes within the processing sector of the industry announced this week prompting considerable apprehension amongst producers and finishers alike.
With a useful entry of young bulls – the most seen at this centre for a number of years – it was fitting that the sale was topped by this class and a super pure bred Limousin bull at 14 months from Messrs Carruthers, Silloans which scaled to £1920 and saw their run of six average £1721 representing a lift of over £300 per head on the corresponding consignment sold 12 months ago. Demand for all bulls was evident with several new purchasers operating at the ringside.
Steer and heifer trade was dominated yet again by Willie Woodman, Great Chesters who saw his fifth consignment this year top at £1890 for steers and £1850 for heifers renowned for their quality breeding and rapid performance on any finishing ration. The run of 23 cattle averaged a notable £1632 throughout for nine steers and fourteen heifers bred along the high and inhospitable Roman Wall.
Worthy of note was the leading animal in the yearling class which was a superb Blonde cross steer aged just short of twelve months that rocketed to £1850 for breeders and noted Blonde cattle purveyors Robert & John English, Brownsleazes, Wark.
Continuing with the ‘Bully’ trend on this day was noted Charolais authority Chris Curry who sold four surplus bulls from his Burradon herd that topped at £1410 and averaged £1322 at just 8 and 9 months of age.
With grassland and other operations now taking precedence the auctioneers foresee a shortage of cattle in the coming weeks and urge producers with cattle still to be sold to contact our team to discuss the benefits of the Hexham Ring.
