Hexham & Northern Marts held their final special Prize Show and Sale of the traditional October cattle sales season with a catalogued sale of 742 head for the Native Show and Sale, sponsored by Rawburn Aberdeen Angus, RM Corbett Ltd & The Luing Cattle Society.

This years pre sale show was judged by Alec and Sandy Ainslie, Linkshead, Cockburnspath. Once again a fantastic turn out of cattle for the native show this year with all breeds being well represented.

After much deliberation, the father and son team decided to award the Overall Championship Rosette and The Martin Wallace Memorial Cup to a gigantic Angus cross steer from Gilsland based cattleman, Mr Michael Baxter, Kiln Hill. This steer went on to also top the days sale selling to £1980.00.

Taking the Reserve was a powerful Hereford cross steer from Messrs Jordon, Tughall Grange, Alnwick which later went on to realise £1880.00.

After the individual beasts were judged, the pens of four were inspected, winning the best pen of four Angus’ was a powerful pen of steers from Messrs Carr, Highwood. Taking the best pen of four any other natives was a hefty pen of Hereford cross steers from Messrs Jordon.

The Luing classes were dominated by well fleshed steers from D, J & W Sedgewick, Errington Red House who took both the individual and pens of four honours.

The sale started off with a small offering of forward continental cattle which met a trade that carried on in the same vein as previous weeks, with all cashing easily. George Herdman, Lunns House sold Limousin cross steers to £1710.00. Soon after Messrs R Sinton & Son, White House sold a stylish Charolais cross heifer for £1740.00.

A great crowd of buyer’s assembled for a fabulous offering of native bred cattle from across the north of England and Scottish Borders. Producers were rewarded with an outstanding trade which saw a rise of £179.00 on last years sale.

One of the highlights of the sale was a terrific run of sixty-four Hereford, Angus and Simmental cross cattle from Michael and Susanne Jordon, Tughall Grange Farm, Chathill. The run topped at £1880.00 for a Hereford cross steer and others to £1850.00 and £1840.00. Angus cross steers sold to £1700.00 whilst Simmental crosses peaked at £1840.00. Angus cross heifers sold to a high of £1610.00 with Hereford cross heifers realising £1540.00 leaving a healthy average of £1520.00 and Messrs Jordon very content with their days trading on Tyne Green.

Leading Beef Shorthorn price on the day came from the well-presented run from Messrs Carr & Son, Highwood who sold a thick bullock to £1510.00.

Messrs Armstrong & Hunter, Carrick brought forward a strong packet of Luing and Sim Luing steers which peaked at £1620.00 for a pair. D, J & W Sedgewick, Errington Red House sold a pen of three steers to £1560.00.

Longhorn steers from M/s H J & R J Armstrong, Old Bridge End sold well and to £1280.00 and heifers from the same home sold to £1140.00 twice.

A very small offering of suckled calves this week sold to £1480.00 for a ten-month-old Limousin cross steer from Mr Ian Scott, Catcherside. Angus cross steers of the same age sold to £1270.00 from R R E & J R Reay, St Oswalds Farm.

Cast Ewes

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1884 Cast Ewes & Rams to a better-than-expected trade although a lot of ewes looking very worse-for-wear.

Topping the sale at £222 was a texel from W Wearmouth & Son, Rosehill.

Beltex x ewes sold to a top of £168 for 4 from Mrs J Irvine, Mill House Farm, who also topped the Suffolk section at £155.

Mule ewes were a touch dearer on the week with very fat mules topping at £113 from Messrs D W & J M Barber, Ravenside.

A big entry of horned ewes sold to a nice trade with all classes similar on the week.

Store Lambs

A catalogued entry of 7354 Store Lambs sold to another good trade for a weathered show of lambs and 1/5 of the sale being made up of Mule lambs.

Topping the sale at £179 was a pair of Beltex x lambs from Messrs P Guiry & Son, Town Farm, Glanton.

A trio of Beltex x lambs sold to £144 from Messrs J Carr & Co, Camphill.

Not far behind was 6 Beltex x lambs at £143 from Mrs J Irvine, Mill House.

Howick Estates once again brought a super run of 210 Texel x & Suffolk x lambs topping at £125 for 26 Texel x lambs and 30 Suffolk x lambs at £122.

Mule lambs topped at £118 for a trio from Messrs J R Robinson & Son, Warksfield Head.
