Weekly Store Sale including Show for Store Lambs

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their first sale of store cattle in the month of November and offered a sound catalogue of 439 beef bred steers, heifers and young bulls.

The Charolais breed dominated the day and one consignment in particular, that from Harry Vickers, Low Hedgeley, Powburn which saw 15 of the best cross bred bullocks hit the sale ring at 17-19 months of age, well-summered and in great condition.  The run and sale peaked at £2160 for a thunderous steer bred locally to Mr Vickers and brought out in fine form, leading the pen which were highly sought after and averaged £1855 throughout, occupying many of the top price spots of the day and representing a lift of £260 on the same consignment sold twelve months ago.

The leading Limmy came in at £1830 for a smart bullock from father and son Jasper & James Wardle, Brokenheugh Farms who sold heifers to a top of £1690 twice and averaged £1610 for two steers and six heifers sold at 16-18 months.

The female portion of the sale was topped at a little more at £1700 on two occasions, both early in the day and both Limousin cross ladies – the first from Messrs Thompson, Springwell Cottage and then again shortly after by Alan Ogle, Comb Hills, Slaley.  On the day demand for the best end of the older, forward heifers far outstripped that of their male counterparts with strong competition at ringside.

Another Charolais cross-bred consignment of note was brought south to Hexham from the side of the A697 by staunch supporter and noted breeder/rearer James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown who saw his nineteen-strong pen of steers at 15/16 months top at £1810. With demand from several longstanding return purchasers these well-bred types were nicely batched in level lots and averaged a commendable £1592 and a sizeable lift on the year.

Andrew Proctor, Swarland Old Hall brought five exceptional Limousin heifers forward and topped at £1690 to average a very level £1570 throughout for the well-bred surplus from his renowned pedigree bull breeding enterprise.  All these fine females went home with high end, live market finishers intent on supplying high street butchers with continued quality cattle.

Despite last week being the dedicated native breed week another good show of Angus cross cattle were presented and topped at £1780 twice for big black bullocks from both Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside and David Robson, East Shaftoe ably assisted by stockman Daniel Thompson.  These noted purveyors averaged £1753 for three and £1768 for nine bullocks sold respectively. Heifers scaled to £1680 from Angus authority Dennis Burn, Aydonshields who sold three on the day to average a respectable £1526.

With the October sales now dispensed with younger cattle are in short supply however Derek Archer, Stone Stile sold shapely yearling heifers to £1320 and Jonathan Patterson, Broomhope sold steers to £1260, twice – encouraging for those contemplating the second ‘Bellingham’ sale of spring born sucklers being held next week. Store Lambs

Hexham & Northern Marts held its inaugural November show of store lambs kindly sponsored by Tynedale Insurance Services Ltd. Tasked with judging was regular Hexham supporter Barney Morgan, Bridge Farm, Herefordshire. A catalogued entry of 7946 store lambs went under the hammer selling to another strong trade.

Topping at £165 were the champion pen of lambs from Messrs Storey, Woodhead. A super run of 102 lambs from this home averaged just over £135.

Mules sold to another great trade with multiple different homes passing the £100 mark, the highlight being the 1st prize pen of mules from Messrs Grieve, Whiteside selling to £121.

Horned lambs sold to a nice trade, but flesh still very much wanted, strong lambs in demand with many different homes selling lambs over the £80 mark.

One highlight of the sale was the outstanding run of Suffolk x Halfbred lambs from Messrs Shell, Brandon, this eye catching pen of sheep averaged £141 for 100 lambs sold.

Again credit must go to all vendors for putting forward such a good show of sheep considering both the time of year and the wet conditions, the sale average more than £10 up on the year with more lambs forward.

Please continue to enter your lambs with cataloguing closing at 11am Monday.
