Weekly Store Sale including Annual Tow Law Prize Show & Sale
Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts held their annual “Tow Law” Prize Show and Sale for Store Cattle and Suckled Calves with an entry of 562 cattle from across County Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
Judging this year’s final Store Cattle show was left in the very capable hands of Mr J Williams, Wrenbury, Cheshire. Judging the Store Cattle section first, Mr Williams awarded the H H Mews Memorial Cup to an outstanding Black Limousin cross steer from Messrs E & TN Ballantyne, Cowburn Rigg which later sold for £2080.00 to Mr I Bowe, Quarry House.
Following the Store Cattle classes, the Suckled Calves were judged, and winning the Colin Mitchelson Memorial Plate & The Perpetual Trophy was a very stylish black Limousin cross heifer consigned by Messrs Charlton, Whiteside. This went under the hammer at 12 noon and was purchased by Messrs Lee, Agars Hill for £2250.

Trade for all classes of cattle forward was extremely competitive and extreme rates were accomplished for the top end of yearling continentals especially with purchasers from across the country choosing Hexham as the place to procure cattle. A very healthy rise on last year’s average of £135 was observed, leaving all customers extremely satisfied with their days trading.
The leading price of the day fell to the very last beast through the ring, a twenty-one-month-old Limousin heifer from Mr T C E Armstrong, Harlow Bower which reached the dizzy heights of £2350.00.
Messrs I & A Hamilton, Claywalls returned with another great run of Limousin cross steers and this week sold a pair to £2100.00. Selling to the same price was a thumping Charolais cross steer from Messrs R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange.
Leading native this week came from Messrs G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside who sold an Angus cross steer to £1780.00 and another to £1760.00.
Suckled Calves
Great demand once again for suckled calves was seen at the traditional “Tow Law” sale and the marvelous trade continued from the previous days Bellingham Sale. Leading this section was clean sweep for the Charlton’s of Whiteside who sold two heifers to £2250 and £2200 and then also took the top price for steers, selling a pair of nine-month Limousin crosses for £1590.00. This left the roman wall producers with a fantastic average of £1560 for sixteen suckled calves.
Messrs A & C L Bell, Woodhall returned with another great run of Limousin & British Blue cross calves, these were highly sought after and sold to £1560.00 for a Blue cross steer.
Mr B Watson, Baal Hill brought forward another fantastic run of well-bred suckled calves out of the Wolsingham countryside and sold nine-month-old Simmental cross steer calves to £1480.00.
Next week sees our final Store Cattle show of the autumn and entries are invited for the Native Show and Sale to auctioneers over the weekend or to the office on Monday morning for cataloguing.
