Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 240 catalogued Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. This week being the special monthly sale for native breeds with a larger proportion of the sale being mainly Angus and Luing bred cattle. Trade for all classes once again met extreme rates of return with the better end of continentals seeing a remarkable trade throughout. The sale average throughout achieved an eye watering £1445.65. Steers made up just over half of the sale and returned an average of £1519.90 topping at £1970 for a Parthanais cross from Mr J Sisterson, Newlands Haugh. Not far behind reaching £1960.00 firstly was a Limousin cross from GA Ogle, Blackburn and then a thumping Angus x steer from Holywell Farms Ltd, Church Farm. Again proving being towards the end of the sale doesn’t matter here at Hexham and selling a Limousin cross steer to £1940.00 was Brokenheugh Farms, Haydon Bridge.
Heifers sold to a marvelous trade and leveled at £1358.29 and topped at £1880.00 for the first animal in the ring, a Pure Charolais from Ouston Farms Limited, Trench Hall Farm. Messrs JL & M Wilkinson & Sons, Bollihope Shield made another successful trip over the tops and out of Weardale selling Angus heifers to £1800.00. Crossing the Cumbrian border line and heading east was Mr RS Rutter, Far Town who peaked at £1780.00 for a red Limousin cross.
Hexhamshire producers, Clive and Daniel Nixon, Stotsfold brought their usual quality Limousin sired sorts selling a pen of three heifers to £1740.00.
The younger cattle once again, like last week, met a flying trade and more could have easily been sold. One of the highlights of the day was an outstanding run of Limousin cross calves aging 9-10 months from Messrs W D & B Thompson, East Unthank which sold to £1730.00 for a 9 month red Limousin cross heifer. Steers reached a high of £1660.00 twice.
Smart eleven month old Angus cross calves from Dan Herdman, Acton sold to £1130.00 and £1100.00. Young, nine month old Luing cross steers were in real demand from D & A Stanners, Low Chesterhope and peaked at £1000.00.

A pair of Suffolk cross ewes sold to £170 from Mr J O Clark, Brinkburn New Houses.
Mules topped at £124 twice with 4 from Messrs W & JA Longlands, Rusheylaw and then a trio from Messrs D Carr & Son, Highwood.
Blackface ewes sold to £90 from Nilston Rigg Farms.

Store Hoggs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 2740 Store Hoggs to an extreme trade although vendors must be credited on a great show of Hoggs forward. The ring full of buyers with some going home short of numbers.
The show of sheep forward provided an outstanding average of £106.14 for all breeds, shapes and sizes which is an increase of £6.25 on the week and £33.28 on the year for 701 more sold.
Topping the sale at £162 was a pair of Texels from Messsrs AG & D Bisset, Middle Dukesfield, to regular Herefordshire Buyer.
A brace of lots sold to £148 from D & P Hepple, Hill Crest and Mr J L Archer, White Hill.
A pen of 21 Beltex x hoggs sold for £138 from J E Holiday & Son, Woodland House.
Suffolk x hoggs topped at £133 for 4 from Miss S Glendinning, Laburmun Cottage.
