Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts held their annual New Year prize show and sale of store cattle and offered a similar entry on the year of 516 catalogued head of beef bred cattle from across Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria & The Scottish Borders.
The prize show was once again sponsored by long-standing supporters Stoneacre Motor Group and ably judged by weekly attendee Mr Michael Swann, York who executed his task at hand in the same professional manner in which he conducts his business at the ringside each week.
A small but encouraging entry of show cattle were put before the judge who made his awards as follows;
Steer (18 months & Over)
1st – Messrs Ogle, Blackburn
2nd – Messrs Ogle, Blackburn
Heifer (18 months & Over)
1st – Messrs Guiry, Glanton Town Farm
Steer (Under 18 months)
1st Messrs Athey, High Lovelady Shield
2nd Messrs Ogle, Blackburn
3rd – Messrs English, Brownleazes
Heifer (Under 18 months)
1st – Messrs Athey, High Lovelady Shield
2nd – Messrs Ballantyne, Cowburn Rigg
3rd – Messrs English, Brownsleazes
From the concise and distinguished prize list Mr Swann went on to award the Overall Championship to the simply sublime Limousin cross heifer from John Guiry, Glanton Town Farm which many had commented was the most flawless heifer of her age class to be presented in the store ring at this centre for many years.
Standing as a worthy Reserve was the sweet, stylish and shapely steer which had earlier won the younger age class from Messrs Athey, High Lovelady Shield.
Following on from a blistering trade through the same ring one week earlier a larger entry on this day prompted more interest at the ringside with purchasers in attendance from all over the UK. Trade lifted £40 on the week and a number of customers; both buyers and sellers proclaimed the tariff dearer than that seen elsewhere mid-week with the entire sale returning £1381 throughout.
The sale was topped at £3000 for the champion and the solitary offering from Messrs Guiry, Glanton Town Farm which led the heifer trade and prompted an overall average for the female entry of store cattle of £1333 per head.
Bullocks peaked at £2000 for a cracking home-bred Limmy cross from renowned Hexham ‘face’ Alan Ogle, Comb Hill and this saw the male entry of stores level at £1452 throughout.
Highlights were frequent and dazzling throughout the entire catalogue and far too numerous to mention in their entirety however Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh was amongst the peak of the steer trade topping at £1960 for a Charolais, £1900 for an Angus and enjoying a £1878 average for six bullocks sold on the day.
The Moralee lads from Hard Riding once again caught the eye of the heifer finishers ringside topping at £1860 for their best Blue, £1840 for their best Limmy and levelling at £1790 for five fabulous females that found new homes from Hexham.
Robert and John English, Brownsleazes were again amongst the prizes and often feature in the top prices – today was no exception. They sold two cracking Blonde cross heifers, both at £1880 and with their third prize bullock cashing at £1710 they were delighted with an average on the day of £1823 for three.
Steven Graham, Miller Hill, Gilsland, Cumbria is another breeder of note who’s cattle travel well to Hexham and on this day he was treated to another smart trade. His seven well-bred Limmy bullocks peaked at £1840 and with three sisters scaling to £1700 a well-deserved average of £1714 for his ten was attained.
Younger cattle were also in the ascendancy and David Teasdale saw one of the leading trades on the day for his 14 ‘monthers’ from Grindon Hill which topped at £1750 twice for steers and at £1570 for heifers with David taking home a deserved average of £1635 for six and two sold respectively.
Cattle from ‘along The Wall’ are one of the main attractions, amongst others, for those who attend Hexham to buy on a regular basis and one such family of producers whose reach now extends beyond Hadrians Wall country are The Bells of Woodhall & High Edges Green and this day proved the basis of such an attraction. With calves either side of ten months of age The Bells truly rang the bell and topped at £1560 for a nine month old Blue cross steer with heifers at the same age by the Limmy bull cashing at £1440. Redvers Bell and family sold eight exceptional steers with five heifer sisters to average a massive £1409 at such young ages.
Indeed theirs was the pick of the trade which saw the weanling portion of the sale return at £1270 throughout for bullocks and at £1175 for heifers, all of which were ten months or younger.
It is often reported that a later turn at Hexham isn’t a bad turn and today this point was proven yet again by Barry Rayson, Salmonswell who took his turn at the back and was last sold on the day. His four sought after steers were chased to £1500 and with his two heifers topping at £1440 Barry went home to Acomb happy with an average of £1342 for the six calves sold and now looks forward to his next trip over The Tyne.
