Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly catalogued sale of 432 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. The last sale in February saw exceptional returns for vendors from across the North of England and Scottish Borders. The regular full ringside of buyers ensured a fast trade and remarkably ensuring all classes were again sharper on the week. The varied show of store cattle went on to average an impressive £1341.37 right through.
They kicked off in some form with the first beast in the ring from Mr G S Eggleston, Thornham Hill, a hefty Hereford cross steer sold to £1950.00. Mr Eggleston’s run of Hereford cross steers went on to average a very healthy £1866.00.
Taking the top honours for both the steer and heifer trade was Messrs BW & GE Tailford, Beacon Rigg who sold store Limousin cross heifers to £2200.00 and Limousin cross steers to £2080.00.
Store bulls once again sold like hot cakes at Hexham with Edgerston Trading Ltd, Jedburgh selling Salers to £1950.00 and Limousin’s to £1850.00.
Charolais bred cattle continue to be well sought after here at Hexham selling to a high of £1880.00 for a steer from Mr JT Coxon, Hepscott Manor. Charolais cross heifers from Messrs R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange, Bishop Auckland sold to £1840.00 & £1820.00.
The yearling and middle-aged cattle once again met a flyer with a pair of Limousin cross steers barely having their birthday from Messrs Wilson, Throstle Nest peaking at £1610.00. Messrs W & JA Longlands, Rusheylaw sold a marvellous run of Limousin cross heifers selling a sixteen-month-old to £1600.00.
The weaned calf section saw a blistering trade again with 118 weaned calves levelling at an average of £1124.70. Topping this section with a Blue cross steer was M/s J C & C Macdonald, Light Birks which went on to realise £1400.00. Not far behind was relatively new customer Mr G Cant, Brear Cottage who returned with another run of weaned calves that sold to £1390.0 for a Limousin cross steer.
Nine-month-old Limousin cross heifers from Messrs J A Bousfield’s & Sons, Low Stokoe were keenly sought after at peaked at £1300.00.
One of the highlights in this section was a grand run of thirty-three Limousin cross weaned calves from Messrs Robertson, Embleton Mill, Alnwick that sold to a high of £1380.00 for steers and £1270.00 for heifers with an impressive average of £1241.21.

Topping the ewes was a Texel ewe at £188 from Lilburn Estates, Roseden, Wooler. Roseden also sold four Suffolk ewes to £186.
Mule ewes sold to £119 for 17 from Messrs W H Smith & Son, West Shields.
A pen of 16 Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £130 from Mr R Pattinson, Temon Farm.
Horned hill ewes sold to £110 for 8 Blackface Ewes from Messrs W Walton & Sons, Dunns Houses.
