Store Cattle & Store Sheep
Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts held their final store cattle sale of the year and offered a useful entry of 240 catalogued head which included over 120 Angus, South Devon & Highland cattle for the monthly sale of native breed types.
Despite a reduced crowd at the ringside no doubt due to the onset of the yuletide festivities a mixed show of cattle sold well throughout with those assembled keen for all classes. The sale peaked at £1880 for a big Angus cross bullock from weekly consignor and Cornsay based breeder John Carpenter, Rare Dene. This one was followed by the lead continental on the day; a shapely Limmy steer at £1860 from well-known Slaley cattleman and mart ringman of renown Mr Alan Ogle, Comb Hills.
Brian and Angus Tailford, Beacon Rigg, Langley hauled their own quality run of thick bullocks to Hexham and scaled to £1850 for Simmentals and £1840 for Limmys to average a commendable £1744 for five steers sold on the day.
The female trade topped at £1760 for a hefty lady from The Forsters of Lowes Fell, Lowgate who also sold steers by the same Limousin sire at £1780 and £1770 to complete a good days trading through the Hexham ring.
Despite the wind-down towards Christmas three notable consignments were presented by producers now synonymous with the store ring on Tyne Green and all were rewarded for their efforts by an eager raft of return purchasers. Peter Findlay, Stoop Rigg, Simonburn sold a level run of Angus steers and heifers at 17-18 months that peaked at £1480 and £1450 respectively. Sandy & Andrew Ord, Newton Greens brought forward their annual consignment of 50 Angus and Simmental cross steers at 15-18 months and these well-presented bullocks topped at £1690 and £1780 respectively to average a very worthy £1504 throughout.
The Waltons of Greyside cattle are lauded across the region and always generate a frenzied hotbed of bidding and the twenty head presented on this day were no exception. The outstanding three-quarter and seven-eighths bred Limmy cross calves with both shape and potential in spades were consigned at 13-14 months of age and topped at £1700 for steers and £1570 for heifers all sought after by high-end return purchasers to average a mighty 1565 for ten steers and £1472 for eleven heifers sold on the day.
With a three week break due to the seasonal holidays and the next sale of store cattle at Hexham scheduled for Friday the 5th January 2024 the auctioneers would like to thank all customers; both buyers and sellers for their continued support over the last twelve months. We look forward to welcoming all back to the ringside in the new year and to our special prize show and sale of store cattle which will be held on Friday 12th January.
Merry Christmas and a Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year from all at Hexham & Northern Marts.
