Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its penultimate sale of 312 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves for 2023 and another great trade was seen throughout. Steers to £2020, Heifers sell to £1810 and Young Bulls to £1720 resulting in an average of £1338 for store cattle qill all sold.

Leading the trade for the store cattle was a marvelous black Limousin cross steer from Richard and Chris Thornton, Cornhills, selling to £2020.00 to a regular Yorkshire based finisher.

A nice entry of older Charolais cross steers this week which sold to a high of £1960.00 for a thumper from Mr FT Walton, Flotterton. Not far behind with a great run of forward steers was David and Nick Walker, Satley whose run of ten sold to £1940.00 and went on to average £1873.00.

The Shitlington Hall team were back once again with another smashing run of well-fleshed heifers that went on to peak at £1810.00.

 Natives were again very easily cashed here at Hexham with Angus cross steers selling to £1840.00 from weekly consignor Messrs G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside. Angus heifers sold to a high of £1710.00 from renowned Alnwick based Angus breeder Mr W D Allen, Humbleheugh.

A worthy mention must go to Messrs AJ & T Snaith, Great Tosson who had a great run of eighteen Angus cross cattle which topped at £1680.00 for steers and £1580 for heifers.

Messrs J Browell & Sons, Quarry House brought their usual stamp of quality Limousin and British Blue cross bred cattle which were in great demand from the Hexham faithful which sold to £1810.00 for steers and £1750.00 for a very smart blue roan heifer which is away to make a cow.

Another great run of quality Limousin  cross cattle came from Hexhamshire based family, Messrs J T Nixon & Sons Ltd, Stotsfold who sold steers to £1720.00 and Young Bulls also to the same trade.

A run of year old cattle that took the attention of the full ringside of buyers and were eagerly bid for, was a consignment of Simmental steers forward from Messrs J A & L Ogle, Wydon which sold to £1390.00 for a pair, the same home sold a pen of five to £1350.00.

 A small and mixed show of suckled calves this week, which sold well with purchasers still on the look out for calves to overwinter. Steer calves went on to average £885 and £729 for heifer calves. Leading this section and selling to £1100 on two occasions were Limousin cross steers from Mr B Watson, Baal Hill.

Topping the sale at £200 were Texels from Messrs T Common & Son, Low Ardley.

A pen of 6 sold to £180 from Messrs J O Clark, Brinkburn Newhouses with another at £180 from Low Ardley.

Suffolk x ewes sold to £142 for 4 from Mr R F Rogerson, Harbottle Grange.

Mules sold to £112 for a pair from Messrs D N O Scott & Son, The Chesters.

A pen of 26 Blackface ewes sold for £98 from Messrs D A & M A Teasdale, Grindon Hill.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 2723 store lambs to another great trade averaging £93.23.

Topping the sale was a Texel at £142 from A S Whitfield, High Castle Dene.

Mr J J & J M Sanders, Bavington Hill Head sold Beltex x lambs to £140 & £139.

Blue Texel x lambs sold to £131 from Mrs J Irvine, Mill House Farm.

Dutch Texels sold to £130 from Izzy and Charlotte Patrick, Longsteads.

Suffolk lambs sold to £119 for a pen of 9 from Messrs J S Urwin & Sons, Dovecote.

Mules topped at £120 for a pen of 20 from Mr I Potts, Redburn Farm.
