Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their first store sale of the New Year and offered  a catalogued entry 0f 237 head of store cattle, slightly more than the same sale held twelve months ago.

A useful company of buyers gathered at the ringside following the two-week festive break and trade for all classes was markedly increased on that seen pre-Christmas.

The sale peaked at £1810 for a massive Charolais cross steer, one of a run of six from regular consignors Messrs Walker Bros, Satley that returned an average on the day of £1618 at 20 months of age to the delight of the County Durham based family farming operation.

It was a heifer in the younger age bracket that led the female portion of the sale and this one was a super sleek red Limmy cross at 15 months of age from noted breeders of top quality sorts Messrs Ballantyne, Cowburn Rigg which changed hands at a whopping £1750 to lead their pen of three similar types which levelled at £1533.

A number of Angus cross cattle were presented on the day and these topped at £1620 followed by another at £1600 from highly regarded purveyors of the black breed – Messrs Burn, Aydonshields and Messrs Hall, Hallington New Houses respectively. Messrs Ord, Newton Greens led the steer trade with bullocks at £1560 and another pair at £1550 whilst their run of 20 well-bred and well-presented Simmental cross heifers at 16-18 months topped at £1350 and averaged £1261 for the North-Northumberland producers that have now enjoyed a number of weeks consigning top quality sorts to the Hexham ring.

The younger class of cattle were dominated by yet another run of very well-bred yearling steers and heifers from Messrs Walton, Greyside who brought forward twenty of their trademark types that are always sought after and always perform well through the ring at this centre. Steers topped at £1540 for Limmy crosses and £1410 for Blues whilst their heifers scaled to £1300 for a super Blue and £1260 for the best Limousin cross lady. One with another twelve steers averaged £1320 and eight heifers came back at £1210 to cap a great days trading for the Newbrough based Walton family.

Entries are invited for the special January prize show and sale of store cattle to be held next week and purchasers are reminded that the company has taken the decision to suspend posting sale catalogues for the time being due to the ongoing postal strikes.  If you wish to receive a store stock sale catalogue electronically please contact the Mart Offices on 01434 605444 or info@hexhammart.co.uk and provide your email address.
