Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts offered for sale a catalogued entry of 316 head of store cattle at their weekly sale, almost double that seen twelve months earlier.

Trade continues at a pace at Hexham and with national store cattle numbers shrinking at an alarming rate demand seems to increase week on week with no fewer than 42 buyers gathered round the ringside keen to source quality cattle such as those seen at this centre from noted herdmasters from across the region.

The sale peaked at £1700 twice; firstly for a big red Limmy cross bullock at 18 months of age from Alan Ogle – Slaley based producer and well-known ‘ring drover’ at the auction mart who often figures in the top prices when consigning his well-bred, home-bred cattle for sale.  The second at this level was a tremendous pure bred Limousin young bull from noted pedigree breeders Messrs Henderson, Burntongues, Allendale which displayed all the traits for which both their pedigree and commercial cattle are renowned and sought after at this centre.

Pure bred Limousin cattle were in great demand on the day and a super run of shapely heifers were brought forward by the Carruthers Family from Silloans high on the Army Ranges at Otterburn. The smart packet were suited to either breeding or feeding and a number were purchased to follow both routes; the first three lots all travelling to £1640 and were all purchased by the same discerning Weardale based suckler cow herd owner.  John, Shirley & John Jnr enjoyed a level trade throughout and averaged a noteworthy £1503 for eight well-bred, well- presented cattle sold on the day.

A good proportion of the catalogue were native breeds and Angus once again were to the fore.  Messrs Ord, Newton Greens brought 31 outstanding bullocks to Hexham down the A1 from Alnwick and sold to great advantage topping at £1680 and averaging a mighty £1425 for 17 Angus and 14 Simmental steers all in great condition and displaying great potential.

With all classes seeing great returns the youngest age class certainly looked dearer on the week and peaked at £1280 for a smart, well-grown Blonde cross steer at 10 months from Claire Everitt, Jolly Body, Weardale. David Teasdale, Grindon Hill sold a Limmy at the same at for £1200 and the aforementioned Messrs Henderson sold another at £1170.  Andrew Jackson, Midgeholme brought a nice packet of Limmy steers at 6-7 months and these traded well to average £887 for eight sold on the day.

The company will hold their final sale of store cattle for the year next week on Friday 16th December and producers are urged to enter cattle by 11am on Monday 12th with the Mart Offices to take advantage of these rates.  There will be a three week break over the festive period with the next opportunity to consign store cattle being the first sale of 2023 on Friday 6th January.
