Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its first sale into the festive month of December with a catalogued entry of 246 store cattle. A slightly plainer entry of cattle that was predominantly made up of mid aged and older cattle this week. Trade once again though met extremely competitive rates. All types, beef and dairy bred were easily sold leaving a healthy sale average of £1211.56.

Leading the sale was the third beast in the ring, a hefty Angus cross steer from Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields that went on to realise £1740.00. Limousin cross steers from Messrs W Patterson & Son, Halton Red House reached the heights of £1700.00.

Highest priced heifers on the day came from the Ridley Family, Shitlington Hall, who had a marvellous run of ¾ bred Limousin cross heifers that sold to £1610.00 & £1570.00. Charolais cross heifers from Mr F T Walton, Flotterton sold to £1605.00.  

The handful of younger cattle forward sold very easily with Messrs J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill selling 10 month old Limousin cross steers to 1250.00 and heifers of the same age to £1190.00.

Suffolk crosses sold to £155 for a pair from J D Straughan, Dalton Hill Head.

Swales sold to £74 for a trio from Messrs M W Walton & Son, Rawfoot.

Hexham and Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 3975 store lambs to a slightly sharper trade.

Topping the sale was a Suffolk cross lamb from Messrs M C & M D Sparke, Salmonfield which was donated to the Doddie Weir Foundation selling to £140 on two occasions to Mr Ben Gray and Mr John Errington.

A pen of 4 Beltex cross lambs sold to £125.50 from Mr J Irvine, Mill House. Not far behind at £125 was a Beltex from Messrs N G, K M & J G Beveridge, Low West House.

A pair of Suffolk cross lambs sold to £116.50 from Mr J C Cuthbert, Bank Foot.

A small entry of Mules sold to £96 for a pen of 12 from Mrs R & M J Lee, Harwood Shield.
