Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their final sale of store cattle in the month of November offered a catalogued entry of 323 head.

As is typical at this time of year a lesser show of quality was presented however the best of these continue at great rates and the company saw the entire sale average £1216 throughout with steers levelling at £1253 and heifers returning at £1160 to vendors great delight.

Honours were even between the continentals and natives this week with the top spot being shared by both the Angus and Limousin sire, both peaking at £1680 from Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside and Geoff Ogle, Blackburn respectively. Mr Tomlinson went on to average £1530 for four similar types sold and Mr Ogle sold the same number of Limmys to level at £1620.

The female section topped at £1610 for a cracking Charolais heifer from Messrs Riddle, Blakelaw, Bellingham which was one of a run of sound commercial types turned out in fine fashion by stockman Simon Long for the North Tyne operation.

Peter Findlay, Stoop Rigg brought another good run of his trademark Angus cattle down to Hexham from Simonburn and enjoyed a level trade topping at £1620 for both steers and heifers and averaging a deserved £1456 for five of each sold.

A welcome return to the Hexham ring for the second time this month saw James Crocker, Devonport Farms, Blakelaw hit £1570 with his best Blue cross heifer at 18 months whilst his lead bullock; a Limmy at the same age rose to £1430. A cracking load of steers and heifers by the two mainstay sires averaged £1264 for seven bullocks and three females for the Woodburn based enterprise.

The middle bracket of cattle (11-17 months) also continued in the same vein and were topped by a super Limousin cross heifer from Mel Stobbs, High Dalton, Hexhamshire which scaled to £1560.  A bullock brother from the same noted home shared the top male rate in this section at £1480 along with the pen leader from Ken Ridley, Allenshields.  Both vendors went home happy with averages of £1402 and £1336 respectively having sold both steers and heifers on the day.

As numbers tighten in the run up to Christmas the auctioneers expect a similarly lively trade in the first half of December, if you have cattle to sell and would welcome input from our team please call 01434 605444 to discuss the best route to market for your stock.
