Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their annual “Tow Law” prize show and sale for store cattle and suckled calves. This year expertly judged by Mr William Tindale, Paradise. The show was kindly sponsored again this year by Zeotis with a fabulous entry of cattle from across Durham, Northumberland, Cumbria and from over the border in the Scottish Borders.

After much deliberation in the overall championship, Mr Tindale tapped out the fantastic black bullock for the Reeds of Lands Farm who beat its stable mate, a very flashy black heifer to win The Colin Mitchelson Plate & The perpetual Trophy. Both these two fantastic examples of their breed went on to realize the same price of £1520.00.

Taking the first prize in the store cattle was an outstanding 16-month Blue cross heifer from the Yeats family of Woodhouse. After some furious bidding this tremendous heifer finally sold for £2100.00, and is away to make a cow.

Outside of the show cattle store cattle of every class was extremely easy to sell today with yet again buyers from across the United Kingdom competing for the quality cattle that were on offer here at Hexham.

Older cattle once again sold to extreme rates, Charolais cross cattle once again in real demand with Messrs J Herdman, Edlingham Newtown selling a fantastic run of 14 steers to a high of £1725.00. Not far behind was a behemoth of a Charolais cross steer from Mr Ian Thornton, Hay A Park selling to £1720.00.

Native bred cattle continue to sell with ease here at Hexham and taking advantage of this was Messrs G & JH Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside who sold a pair of Angus cross steers to £1690.00.

Suckled Calves

Another fantastic trade was observed for suckled calves and carried on from yesterday’s Bellingham calf sale. The better of calves sold very well and met rates rarely seen before. Steer calves especially very easily sold with many selling in excess of £1250.00. Topping this section were two marvellous black steers from the Bell family, Woodhall, Haltwhistle that achieved £1450.00. The Bells’ run of fourteen well-bred suckled calves aged 7-9 months went on to average £1262.50.

Topping the heifers in this section was a Limousin cross heifer from Messrs J R Robinson & Son, Warksfield Head selling to £1260.00.

Young Bulls

More and more young bulls can easily be sold here at Hexham with the firepower available ringside. Mr J J & J M Sanders, Bavington Hill Head took full advantage of this and sold Simmental bulls to £1720.00 and £1660.00.

Reminder that next week sees our special show and sale of Native bred cattle and we invite entries to auctioneers over the weekend and to the office on Monday morning for cataloguing.
