Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of store cattle offered a sound catalogued entry of 321 head which included over 180 native breed cattle for the monthly special sale of such types.

With a more mixed entry and the quality sorts seen throughout October now largely having passed through the market levels were a little easier than of late although the best end of each class continued to sell well and a great many buyers remain active at the ringside.

The sale was topped, for the first time in memory by a huge Parthenaise cross bullock bred from a Charolais mother by noted producer Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh. At 18 months of age the steer would be by far and away the biggest and best beast in the market and scaled to a noteworthy £2110 selling to a staunch North Yorkshire based purchaser.

Mr Sisterson remarked it was the best cross-bred bullock he had ever produced and that he had yet to exceed the two thousand pound mark at this centre. We aim to please here at Hexham and this one was the second sold by Ken on the day and the second to reach that figure as his first; a Charolais cross at the same age sold for exactly £2000 to cap a great days trading for the renowned breeder of commercial Charolais bulls.

Limmy crosses peaked at £1880 for a hefty steer with shape from Tom & Andrew Jackson, Midgeholm, Bardon Mill who sold four on the day to average a mighty £1820 and were followed by the lead native beast – a two year-old Angus bullock from Philip Tomlinson, Sunniside that sold well at £1850.

The female trade peaked at £1690 for the first beast sold on the day which was a British Blue cross heifer from Willie & Mark Longlands, Rusheylaw that was equalled by the lead Angus lady at the same figure from Mark Featherstone, Allendale Farm. Messrs Longlands sold 4 strong heifers, all by the Blue Bull to average a level £1600 and Messrs Featherstone sold four by the black bull – three heifers and a steer that averaged £1562 throughout.

As is the case on such native breed days no fewer than eighteen breed and cross-bred cattle were presented for sale; both native and continental but with the emphasis on the former points of note were as follows;

South Devon steers sold to £1430 & £1380 from John Moore, Wingates Wholme; Luing bullocks sold to £1210 from Ian Thornton, Hay-a-Park whilst heifers sold to £1090 from David Milburn, Blue Burn; Hereford cross steers sold to £1130 from Betty Harrison, The Tofts and to £1100 from John Anderson, Whiskershield; Beef Shorthorn cross steers sold to £1130 from Clive Dodd, Wayn Riggs with heifers to £1140 from Richard Wise, Sillywrea; Belted Galloway heifers topped at £1080 from Philip Scott, Westburnhope and Galloway bullocks climbed to £1050 from Messrs Haines, High Broadwood Hall.
