Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale of Store Cattle offered a catalogued entry of 545 which included over 200 Spring Born Suckled Calves for the second “Bellingham” sale and the last special sale of the like for the back-end sales. All classes of cattle very easily sold today and a rise of £155 on last year’s sale average.
A good entry of older, forward stores this week for the time of year and the recent buoyant trade seen here at Hexham continued from the very off, with the first beast in the ring, an Angus cross steer from Messrs P Featherstone & Son, Allendale Farm selling to £1880.00. Shortly afterwards another Angus cross steer reached the same price but this time from Messrs DA & P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields.
Topping the sale was an outstanding Black Limousin cross heifer that came out of a great run from Devonport Farms (Blakelaw), West Woodburn, that settled at £2250.00 and is away to make a cow. The same home sold shapey Limousin cross steer to £1900.00 also.
A terrific run of well fleshed steers from M W & C M Ridley, Shitlington Hall sold to a high of £2100.00 and £1950.00.
The younger cattle saw a flying trade right through and those that brought cattle forward were handsomely rewarded with a full ringside present looking for wintering cattle with many leaving short of numbers.
GA & DE Thompson, Howburn had a great day’s trading selling 12-15month old Limousin and Blue cross steers and heifers to £1770.00 for a steer and £1600.00 for heifers.
The second half of the sale was made up of suckled calves 10 month and younger and were prodominently hill bred calves. These met a flying trade with all meeting extreme rates for the quality forward.
Leading the trade and making the successful trip up from Lincolnshire was Messrs TA & LC Lyon, Lintre House who sold Limousin cross steers to £1500.00 and £1460.00.
Proving once again a late turn doesn’t affect trade, Messrs BA & AM Storrow & Sons, Willimoteswick sold Limousin cross heifers to £1330.00.
One of the highlights of this section was a marvelous run of 5–9-month-old calves from Mr B Watson, Baal hill, Wolsingham who topped at £1260.00 for a 6-month Limousin cross steer and went on to average £1145.29 for seventeen forward.
A small entry of 5-month-old Angus cross young bulls sold extremely well from Mr A G W Blakey, Woodhall selling to £740.00. More young bulls can easily be sold in this centre, and we are actively seeking bulls for customers.
