Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale offered a catalogue of 369 store cattle from herdmasters across Northumberland, County Durham & Cumbria.
With a greater continental influence this week weight and shape were in abundance and trade yet again saw a rise for a great show of quality. Topping the sale was a super pure bred Charolais heifer from noted bull breeders Messrs Campbell, Thrunton, Alnwick which changed hands at £1970, followed by a brace of Limmy cross bullocks at £1960 – The first from David Johnson, Blackhalls then another from Edward Heslop, Colwell Demesne.
Following on from a great trade last week Angus cattle were still very much to the fore with steers topping at £1890 from the new Greenfield holding of Robin Oxley, Consett, County Durham whilst heifers scaled to £1870 from now noted Angus purveyors Messrs Watson, Holywell Farms Ltd.
Several consignments of forward sorts were keenly bid for and with younger, yearling type cattle being retained for the special sales next month the majority of the catalogue comprised of cattle from fifteen months of age and older.
Highlights throughout the sale were many but included a cracking run of well-bred Limmy bullocks at 16-18 months from Geoff Hubbuck, Rising Sun which peaked at £1930 for an absolute thumper and averaged £1648 for ten sold from his pen.
Ian Scott & Sons, Corneyside peaked at £1860 for a similarly well-bred bullock and sold seven in total to return £1712 throughout to round off a canny day’s trading for the Matfen men.
Peter Charleton brought forward another great run of Angus bullocks from his Horncastle partnership enterprise and was well rewarded on the day for well-bred native breed steers in nice condition. These peaked at £1780 and averaged £1541 per head for 11 sold representing a phenomenal lift of £389 per head on the year and just reward for great cattle husbandry and stockmanship.
Messrs Allgood, Nunwick made a welcome return to the store ring at Hexham and their reputation for top class cattle goes from strength to strength thanks to the efforts of manager Davy Thirlwell and his team that turned out Charolais cross steers to £1790 and bullocks by the Stabiliser stock sire now favoured on this North Tyne family farmed estate that topped at a worthy £1700. The run of ten big bullocks returned a pleasing average of £1618 for five of each by both sires with the stabiliser contingent pipping their stablemates by a notable £36 per head.
A smaller entry of younger cattle was presented as mentioned but leading these were a great run of ¾ Limmys from Messrs Ballantyne, Cowburn Rigg near the recently lamented Sycamore Gap. As well as solitary saplings the best of cattle can also thrive in that harsh upland environment proven by well-bred steers scaling to £1780 and heifer sisters trading at £1600 for the noted Roman Wall producers – encouragement indeed for the cattle-centric month of sales ahead.
