Store Cattle & Store Sheep

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held their 28th Anniversary Prize Show & Sale of Store Cattle and offered a catalogued entry of 727 head.

The prize show was kindly sponsored by two longstanding joint supporters of this special event; Stoneacre motor group and Zoetis animal health and was expertly judged by an equally longstanding customer Mr Robin Roberts, Anglesey, Wales.

A small but quality entry were put before the judge who made his awards as follows;

Angus Steer – 1st, 2nd & 3rd Prize – Messrs Green, Heckley High House.

Charx Steer – 1st – Messrs Walton, Flotterton, 2nd – Messrs Thornton, Hay A Park, 3rd – Messrs Thornton, Hay A Park

Charx Steer (Junior Div.) – 1st & 2nd Prize – Messrs Crozier, Raggetsyke

Charx Heifer – 1st Messrs Crozier, Raggetsyke

Bluex Heifer – 1st – Messrs Robson, Middle Horsleyhope

Limx Steer – 1st – Messrs Robson, Middle Horsleyhope, 2nd Messrs Reed, Lands Farm, 3rd Messrs Reed, Lands Farm.

From a high quality line-up of first prize winners Mr Roberts chose the very correct Limousin cross steer from Philip Robson, Middle Horsleyhope as his Champion and Best Calf Bred by Exhibitor and the hefty first prize senior Charolais cross steer from Messrs Walton, Flotterton as his Reserve Champion.

The smart, black Champion courted a deal of attention in the sale ring from all over the UK and sold for £1760 to Ian Bowe, Northallerton.  The sizeable and shapely Charolais steer sold for £1860 to George Chapman, Carlisle.

Despite a glorious day – the first in a long while – for both corn and grassland operations a good crowd of buyers were at the ringside from start to finish and despite the recent downturn in finished and deadweight markets trade was on the whole a great deal livelier than expected.

Outwith the show cattle trade peaked at £1880 for a thumping pen of three Charolais bullocks from Jimmy Walton, Flotterton who sold 11 on the day to average £1777 throughout.

Alan Ogle, Comb Hill led the female trade with a super, black, home-bred Limmy heifer that scaled to £1860. Likewise Willie & Mark Longlands cashed a super smart run of Blue cross heifers that topped at £1800 and levelled at £1568 at just 16 months.

Messrs Green, Heckley High House and Ian Thornton, Hay A Park tied for top honours in the native section both selling Angus bullocks to £1720. Messrs Green brought out a super run from their Alnwick enterprise and sold 45 outstanding cattle to average £1542 throughout.

Leading the middle age range of cattle was yet another stupendous run of bullocks from Frank & Reg Simpson, Square House. The brothers from Quebec, County Durham peaked at £1850 for three separate bullocks and averaged £1785 for 9 toppers sold at just 15 months of age

The youngest class of cattle, those for longer keep at ten months and younger were too sought after and topped at £1560 for an absolute ‘clanker’ from Edward Thoburn, Pitland Hills that sold later in the sale but suffered not a jot because of it proving that a late turn is not a bad turn at Hexham. Other highlights in this class were bullocks to £1480 from Messrs Nixon, Stotsfold and others at £1400 from Messrs Browell, Quarry House – both lots by top notch Limousin bulls and typical of the quality seen here at Hexham.

On a great days trading the entire entry of steers sold to average £1391 and the female portion of the sale levelled at £1252 to the delight of all vendors from across Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria, The Scottish Borders, North & West Yorkshire.
