Store Cattle & Store Hoggs

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts offered 258 catalogued head of store cattle at their weekly sale.  A more mixed show of all classes continue to sell at great rates at Hexham peaking at £1860 for a hefty Charolais cross steer at 18 months from Ken Sisterson, Newlands Haugh who sold 11 weighty sorts to average £1682 throughout.

The dearest Angus cross beast on the day was a big bullock at £1740 from the same home and the dearest heifer was also a big black lass from Graham Tweddle, Springwell, Tow Law. Messrs Thompson, Duddo Hill sold and Angus steer at £1650 and Mark Featherstone, Allendale farm in pen number one sold another at £1640 continuing the seam of black gold that runs through the ring at Hexham.

Younger classes were also mixed but the better end still found new homes with ease.  Dan Nixon, Stotsfold sold his lead Limmy heifer at just 15 months for £1610 to average a pleasing £1343 for 12 sold at the same age completing a nice days trading for the noted Hexhamshire Limousin purveyors.

Messrs Reay, St Oswalds made the shift from selling older sorts to consigning their yearling cattle and were rewarded at £1370 for their best 10 month old steer with shape and style, enjoying an average of £1190 for seven steers and three heifer sisters.

Robin Shield, Wheat Hall opened his 2023 trading account at Hexham with a nice run of 22 well-bred cattle that peaked at £1360 for a Charolais steer, £1380 for a Blue cross heifer and £1280 for an exceptional Charly cross bullock calf at just 9 months of age. The charismatic County Durham cattleman was happy with his day and returned a worthy average of £1136 for 11 steers and 11 heifers sold from 9-14 months of age.

As the days begin to lengthen and wintering cattle ‘turn the corner’ our auctioneers would welcome contact with any herdmasters across the region that wish to maximise their return by consigning cattle to this centre.
