Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its final sale of October with a catalogued entry of 353 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. A varied show of cattle this week which met dearer rates once again. Some have even stated the forward, older cattle to be £100-150 dearer than previous weeks.

The store steers have gone on to average £2137.74 with the store heifers seeing the largest jump in trade compared to last week and went on to average £2132.76 throughout for all classes.

Leading the sale with a fantastic run of run of Charolais cross steers was regular Knaresborough cattleman, Mr I A Thornton, Gibbet House. He saw these peak at £2940.00 and £2710.00.

Highest priced Angus cross beast this week came from Jamie Wood Prendwick Farms, Whittingham noted purveyors of the Angus breed, with a monster heifer selling to £2700.00. This followed by a commendable average for five older heifers of £2580.00.

Top priced Angus cross steer came from I A Thornton, Hay-A-Park with a pair cashing to £2660.00 and the same home sold another to £2640.00 and a pen of four well drawn beasts to £2580.00.

Taking advantage and reaping the benefits of the competitive Hexham Store Cattle ring were the relatively new consignors, R Nattrass & Sons, Sun Rise House Farm, Daddry Shield who sold a splendid packet of well-bred Limousin cross steers aged 16-19 months which sold to £2660.00 and £2590.00.

Regular supporters Ian & Ann Hamilton, Claywalls sold a marvelous run of Limousin cross heifers which sold to £2650.00 and £2580.00 with the run of sixteen leaving an average of £2326.88.

Ken and John Robinson, Warksfield Head brought a tremendous run of yearling Limousin bred steers and heifers which were well sought after. Steers from the Wark outfit went on to sell to £2500.00 twice and twelve-month-old heifers sold to £2320.00.

Stirks continued their strong trade after the Bellingham and Tow Law sales and saw a real demand. These topped at £2380.00 with an eleven-month steer, once again from the Warksfield Head team. An eight-month-old British Blue cross heifer from J Lee & Son, Morley Hill went on to realise £2100.00.
