Store Cattle & Store Sheep inc. Show & Sale of Native Cattle

Hexham Auction Mart

Store Cattle

Hexham & Northern Marts held its Annual October Show and Sale for Native bred cattle this week. A much-increased entry of Native bred cattle compared to last year’s sale, which met another unrivalled trade, making some onlookers very envious and perplexed and new customers extremely happy with their days trading.

All classes of cattle met a great trade, beyond all expectations and leaving many up on the year, which is extraordinary considering the finishing values compared to last year. This is largely due to the large competition ringside here at Hexham with a great attendance from active purchasers.

This year’s pre-sale show was proficiently judged by Father and Son duo and highly regarded Borders finishers, Neil & Michael Gibson, Willowford Farm, Jedburgh. Once again, the show was supported and sponsored by Rawburn Angus, RM Corbett Ltd and Luing Cattle Society.

The show was very well supported once again by Native Cattle producers from right across the North of England and Scottish Borders and following the classes the overall championship and Martin Wallace Memorial Cup was awarded to Charlotte Walton, Flotterton for a tremendous Angus cross steer.

Standing reserve was newcomer to this sale, JRF Pattinson & Son, Hotbank with a great example of a Galloway steer.

The Champion, a terrific 12-month-old steer sold to £2450.00. The Reserve sold to the judge for £1880.00.

Trade was led once again for the second week running by I & A Hamilton, Claywalls who sold a pair of thumping Angus cross steers to £2740.00. Not too far behind was the third prize steer from J Baxter, Kiln Hill, Brampton which realised £2720.00.

A small number of continental bred forward cattle this week met great rates of return with P & PM Walker, Houselope Grange selling Blonde cross steers to £2660.00 and £2620.00. SWS Agri Services, Arnold House made the successful trip east from Carlisle again and sold Limousin cross steers to £2580.00.

An increasing amount of “hairy hill” type cattle are now being sold here at Hexham with an ever-increasing demand. A highlight early in the sale was the run of Blue Grey steers from P Dickinson, Rugley Walls which peaked at £2100.00 for a pen of six.

A pair of White Galloway steers that carried plenty of flesh went on to sell for £1950.00 from G Oliver & Son, Eslington High Hill.

Leading the heifer trade this week was a large and well covered Pure Angus heifer from JF & JK Hayward & Son, Fell House which changed hands at £2460.00 with another from this home cashing at £2420.00. Later in the day J C Rutherford, Old Town brought the usual stamp of power and sold heifers to £2420.00 also.

One of the many highlights of the day was a run of forty Angus and Stabiliser bred steers and heifers from R Leiper & Co, Bygate which were highly desirable, especially the heifers. These seventeen-month heifers sold to £2290.00 for a pen of seven.

The Royal Society Wildlife Trust, Blueburn showed a great run of Luing and Angus bred cattle, very well presented by stockman David Milburn and David Wood. The first prize winning pen of four Luings was a pen of steers which cashed to £2040.00 with the second prize selling to £1920.00.

Next week shall see our annual “Tow Law” sale with a show for store cattle and suckled calves. Entries encouraged for next week’s sale with great demand for cattle expected.
