Hexham & Northern Marts held their Special October Show and Sale of Beef Breeding Cattle which was once again kindly sponsored by Mark Watson Farm Machinery, Tow Law and this year was very ably judge by Keith and Ian Reed, Dyke Nook.
A great show of Heifers and Calves once again this year with every class well represented and the awards were given out as follows:

After the Classes were judged the Overall Championship and John Riddle Memorial Trophy was awarded to the Limousin cross class winner, a marvellous black coated ¾ Limousin with a Limousin cross heifer calf at foot consigned by Mr A Tindale, Paradise. This terrific outfit went on to command the leading price on the day of £5500.00 selling to renowned Hexham store cattle producers, Graham and Gemma Common, Low Ardley.
Away from the show winner a fantastic trade was observed throughout, an electric atmosphere was seen with top quality producers from across the North of England descending on Hexham to acquire their breeding replacements. With confidence in the beef industry at a high after some remarkable trades seen here at Hexham this past few weeks, a fierce trade was seen from start to finish with many consigners seeing a large lift on last years sale.
Away from the show winner, the sale saw a high of £5400.00 for the pick of Foley Brothers, Mirlaw House’s run of Heifers and Calves. The renowned Capheaton producers of breeding cattle saw their run of seventeen Heifers and Calves average £4,852.94 a monumental lift of £1100 on the year.
After their show success, brothers Anthony and William Tindale, Paradise saw others in their consignment reach £4900.00 and others to £4300.00 leaving the brothers extremely happy with their days trading and shaper returns achieved compared to earlier efforts recently.
Older cows and calves again, like the younger heifers and calves easily sold and in demand with a seven year old Limousin cross cow with her Limousin cross steer calf at foot from Martin Bros, Cheviot Farm selling to £3200.00.

Herd Dispersals
Hexham and Northern Marts were entrusted with three full or part dispersals from three long standing supporters of Hexham Auction Mart which gathered a fantastic crowd from right across the British Isles. Firstly, the spring calving herd of predominantly first cross black Limousin cows with their late spring and summer born calves from T Byerley & Sons, Birtley Shields. This was then followed by the full herd dispersal of the renowned Willimoteswick herd from B A & A M Storrow & Sons, Willimoteswick and to finish the day, a part dispersal of homebred Limousin cross cows from A R White, Low Staples.
As previously stated, these three herds commanded a great audience from across the country and saw one of the largest crowds seen for many years creating a fantastic atmosphere.
T Byerley & Sons – Birtley Shield
The first part of the Birtley Shield herd dispersal took place after instruction by brothers Thomas and Marshell Byerley had made decision to sell of their renowned herd of black first cross Limousin and British Blue cows with their Limousin cross calves at foot. A herd that has a reputation for producing quality suckled calves that go on and thrive.
These hard-working ladies met a consistent trade throughout with buyers assured of their reputation for breeding quality commercial store cattle. These saw a high of £4000.00 for the only British Blue cross cow, aged 8-year-old with her 5-month-old Limousin cross steer calf.
Limousin cross cows saw a high of £3900.00 for a 5-year-old cow with her 3-month-old heifer calf at foot.
The thirty-eight outfits went on to leave the Birtley Shield producers a healthy average of £2981.08.
B A & A M Storrow & Sons – Willimoteswick
The much-anticipated complete dispersal of the highly regarded Willimoteswick suckler herd attracted high end suckled calf producers from across the country and the Storrow family got their just reward for years of dedicated cattle breeding.
The herd that crossed the best of Limousin and British Blue genetics sold three outfits to the height of £5200.00 with seven other outfits surpassing £5000.00 out of the forty-seven cow and calf units.
After the cow and calves were put up for sale, the homebred in-calf heifers were offered which had been served by Saunders Orrinoco, the very easy calving Wilodge Inspector son.
These met great demand and sold to a high of £4600.00 for a pair with another pair selling to £4200.00.
These were then followed by the in-calf mothers of the suckled calves that sold last week at the Bellingham sale (Av. £2091.61), these sold running with the two herd sires (British Blue; Homilton Patrick or Limousin; Saunders Orinocco). The pick of this bunch was an absolute tank of an 8-year-old BB x cow which achieved £4600.00.
To finish off the sale, the two stock bulls were offered for sale and these sold easily after their progeny had graced the ring. Their quality made the bulls highly sought after with the five-year-old British Blue Bull, Homilton Patrick selling to 5,500gns and the eight-year-old Limousin, Saunders Orinocco selling to 6,000gns.

A R White – Low Staples
Whitley Chapel based Mr A R White, Low Staples consigned the first part of his dispersal of the homebred Limousin cross cows with late spring born calves at foot. These deep, square, traditional continental type suckler cows with calves at foot sold to £3700.00 for one of the youngest cows in the batch, a four-year-old, second calver with her six-month-old steer calf at foot.
The run of sixteen cows and calves went on to command a very respectable £2909.38 average right through.
