Breeding Rams

Hexham & Northern Marts held their final flagship Prize Show & Sale of Breeding Rams for 2025, kindly sponsored by Northumberland National Park, with a catalogued entry of 233 Breeding Sheep & Rams.

All classes of Tups met a strong trade for the classes of tups forward.

Topping the Hill Bred Rams at £2000 was today’s Champion Cheviot off Mr R Powell, Springwood Lodge, Kelso.

Blackfaces went on to peak at £950 for the Champion Blackface from W Walton, Toft House.

A small class forward of Swaledale Rams topped at £500 for today’s Champion from Messrs Green, Hill Farm.

Out with the show classes, Lowland-Bred Tups sold to a peak of £1000 on three occasions. Firstly for a Texel from Messrs J Stephenson & Son, West Mill Hills, secondly for a Beltex x Texel from A S Whitfield, Low Castle Dene and then thirdly for a Texel Cross from A Peart & Son, Woodcroft.

Blackface

Blackface Rams were judged by Mr Ben Duthie, Tresco, who awarded his prizes as follows:

1^st – W Walton, Toft House

2^nd – A & S Murray & Sons, West Deanraw

3^rd – A Murray & Sons, Sewingshields

Swaledale Rams were judged by Mr John Bowes, Glenwhelt House, who awarded his prizes as follows:
