Hexham and Northern Marts held its final sale of Store Cattle and Suckler Calves for February which included the special monthly section for Young Feeding Bulls with an entry of 352 forward. This week saw cattle from the far west of Cumbria who joined in with the increasing number of cross borders producers who seem to be joining the ever-faithful Hexham locals in creating a fantastic cross section of cattle, which in turn is attracting a great cross section of potential purchasers now in attendance.
A fantastic trade was again observed with forward and older cattle meeting a remarkable trade. Store bullocks were especially easy to sell today and saw an unrivalled trade leaving an incredible average of £2141.67.
Topping the steer section with an outstanding black British Blue cross steer was JA Gilson Ag Contractors, Heugh Farm, Durham which realised £2800.00. Another weekly Co. Durham regular, G & EA Herdman, Luns House saw an unbelievable trade for their run of seven Limousin cross steers topping at £2740.00 and the whole run average an eye watering £2678.57.
A marvellous run of seventeen well-fleshed and well-bred Charolais cross steers and heifers from JE Woodman & Son, Great Chesters sold to £2720.00.
Native bred cattle once again sold very easily in this centre and Angus cross steers topped at £2620.00 from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside.
Heifers like the steers met a fierce trade throughout leaving a very healthy and envious average of £2013.09. It was once again James Gilson, Heugh Farm taking top honours with a thumping Limousin cross heifer selling to £2660.00.
W Walton & Son, Ogle Castle took full advantage of the very competitive Hexham ring and sold Limousin cross heifers to £2560.00.
Making their Hexham debut and using the A689 by-pass to great effect to join the A69 was T Pearson & Son, High Plaskett Lands, who sold Charolais cross heifers to £2460.00 with a pair of Limousin crosses cashing to £2360.00 also.
Leading the native charge was a pair of Angus cross heifers from I & A Hamilton, Claywalls which sold to £2350.00.
An increased number of Weaned Calves and Stirks forward this week which met an incredible trade for a very mixed offering and saw an overall average of £1846.00. Steers went on to average £1871.71. Highest price weaned steer was a nine-month-old Charolais cross from returning Chatton producer, E F Brown & Sons Ltd, Amerside Law selling to £2210.00.
Limousin crosses sold to £2180.00 twice, firstly from W & JA Longlands, Rushey Law Farm and then this was matched by one from G H & A Walton, Farnbury.
Heifers in this section went on to average £1796.56 and saw a high of £1860.00 for a Limousin cross from W & JA Longlands, Rushey Law Farm. Again Amerside Law were in the frame selling nine-month-old Charolais cross heifers to £1760.00 and £1720.00.
Attention now turns to the March Spring Show and Sale, which also sees the annual Young Farmers Show and sale of overwintered calves. The show will take place on the Thursday evening commencing at 5pm with the conventional show cattle followed by the Young Farmers Cattle.

This week saw our monthly sale of Young Bulls which once again was a resounding success leaving vendors extremely happy with their days trading and proving once again Hexham can easily sell all classes of Young Bulls. Highest priced bull this week came from Nilston Rigg Farms with a pure 11-month-old selling to £2380.00. Not far behind with some great bulls was D Dixon, Middle Heads which sold to £2340.00 & £2320.00. JF & JK Haywood, Fell House sold Angus bulls to £2080.00. More bulls wanted for next months sale.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1091 Cast Ewes & Tups to a very strong trade for a very lean show forward.
Topping the ewes at £270 was a Texel ewe from Greenchesters Farm.
At £248 was a Texel ewe from G D Herdman, Edlingham Demesne who also sold 4 at £232.
Suffolk x ewes sold to £208 for a pair from R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange.
Bluefaced Leicester ewes sold to £184 for a pair from M Wallace, Farneyshield.
Mule ewes sold to £170 for a pair from the Telfer Brothers, Make-Me-Rich.
Cheviot ewes sold to £158 from W Nattrass, Low House.
Blackface ewes sold to £166 for a pair from J R F Pattinson & Son, Hotbank who also sold 9 at £151.

Store Hoggs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 1722 Store Hoggs to another sizzling trade for a mixed show of Hoggs with March just around the corner. An enviable average of £123.52 was achieved with a keen ringside of purchasers all keen for sheep with many more numbers needed to satisfy demand.
Topping today was a pair of Suffolk Hoggs from J & J Farming, Flotterton when they reached £188. Also at £188 was a Texel hogg from C & C Farming, Flotterton.
Texel x hoggs proved easy cashed with the whole breed averaging £138.14 for 863 sold. Topping this section was I Potts & Son, Hedley Park with hoggs to £172.
B D Milburn, Butterknowes brought his usual stamp of quality continental hoggs to average a pleasing £158.17 to a top of £171.
Blackface hoggs peaked at £130 from Dudlees Partners.
Beltex x hoggs reached £159 from A S Whitfield, Low Castle Dene, this home also sold 16 to £156 and 18 at £145.
More hoggs wanted every week to satisfy demand.
