An increased entry of prime heifers this week met a sharper trade with some well-fleshed and shapey heifers from Chris and Andrew Johnson (H Clark & Sons), Paxton Dene, selling to 429.5p/kg for a Limousin cross selling to Morgan Helliwell, Rochdale for a local butcher.
Highest grossing heifer was heavy Limousin cross from P & PM Walker, Houselop Grange, Tow Law which realised £2746.80 selling to R Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford.

Cast Cows & OTM
An increased entry of Cast Cattle met a remarkable trade, which was dearer compared to previous weeks, with leaner feeding types particularly keenly sought after and easily cashed. The offering consisted predominantly of older, leaner feeding cows, many of which regularly surpassed 285p/kg. The sale achieved a strong overall average of 289p/kg throughout.
A tremendous run of younger cows from S A Weatherley, Windy Hill Farm topped at 351.5p/kg for a stylish Limousin cross. Making the successful journey down from Alnwick, Ian & Oli Tulip, Bilton presented a smart run of well-fleshed cows, selling to 343.5p/kg.
The highest-priced native-bred cow came from D J Ord, Chatton Park, with a very well-finished Hereford cross reaching 307.5p/kg or £2,936.63.
Leading the gross section was R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange, with a big Charolais cross cow realising £2,965.50. Angus cross cows from GR & SK Meek, Eland Hall sold to £2,707.25.
Demand for cows of all classes continues to strengthen weekly at Hexham, with ring-side competition visibly brisk and extremely well supported with outlets for all classes well catered for.

A small entry of three cast bulls met an exceptional trade. A well-fleshed nine-year-old Limousin from WN & JC Gilhespy, Tedcastle, at the end of his working life, sold to 324.5p/kg and grossed £3,731.75.

Prime Hoggs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1547 Prime Hoggs to another improved trade with plenty of weight forward with hoggs from 33kg to 67kg. Overall average of 351.1ppk or £162.27 with an SQQ of 372.6ppk for 554 more sold on the year.
Topping the sale at £205 was a Texel x hogg from Staythorpe Farming, Newark who sold a run of 274 hoggs, selling with ease and averaging £166 or 362.95ppk for 46.2kg.
Top ppk was 424.3ppk for 4 Beltex x hoggs from J M Dickeson, Hope House who sold 58 to average 381.5ppk for Mule, Swale and Texel x hoggs.
R J & L I Henley, Cottage Farm, Boroughbridge sold 220 hoggs to top at £196 for 3 or 411.6ppk and averaged £168.30 or 359.13ppk for 46.94kg.
Hoggs wanted to meet strong buyer demand at Hexham.
