Hexham & Northern Marts held their weekly sale of store cattle and offered a good entry of 577 head which included a considerable run of over 300 head of native breed cattle for the monthly special sale of such sorts.
The sale leader on the day was a super Limmy cross bullock from noted local ‘martman’ Mr Alan Ogle, Comb Hill which quickly rattled to the height of £2720 much to the delight of the Slaley based producer.
Next in the rankings was an outstanding Charolais cross bullock at £2670 – the lead beast in the first ever consignment to this centre from Mr Les Carr & Partners, Upper Higham Lane, Northampton – his second trip to The North of England this week proved considerably more beneficial with a great contingent of buyers at the ringside keen for the well-bred, top quality steers and heifers.
The trip up the A1 resulted in a resounding success with all lots greatly surpassing all expectations – Limousin cross steers selling to £2440 and similarly heifers by the same bull soaring to £2500. This led to a deserved average of £2337 for 24 bullocks and £2107 for 14 heifers suggesting that this trip may not be the last to Hexham for the renowned Northamptonshire cattle producing family.
On the dedicated native breed day it was fitting then that a number of the top price places were occupied by such cattle. Angus steers peaked at £2620 from Messrs Leiper, Bygate whilst Messrs Ord, Newton Greens followed with another at £2610. The top Angus heifer ranking was attained by Messrs Hall, West Butsfield at £2460 and followed by Messrs Wood, Prendwick Farms with another at £2420.
Following in the native vein Hereford bullocks topped at £2280 for a big bullock from Messrs Hindmarsh, Stoop Rigg and whiteheaded heifers rose to £2140 from longstanding consignors to this centre; Messrs Forster, Brackenthwaite, Brampton, Cumbria. South Devon steers sold at the same £2140 from breed stalwart John Moore, Wingates Wholme and Beef Shorthorn bullocks traded at a top of £1960 from Hexham store ring convert Eric Rogerson, Harbottle Grange who braved the snow and ice to bring a twenty strong consignment of natives and continentals to Tyne Green from snowy Coquetdale.
Another Cumbrian producer saw the advantage of the Hexham ring, this one Mr Ian Bell, Hallbankgate who cashed a nice run of Luing and Galloway cross steers which topped at £1860 and Messrs Layfield, Milkup Bank, County Durham followed with a smart run of Belted Galloway steers in fine form that scaled to a worthy £1840.
Last but by no means least of the native day rundown were the renowned Murray family that farm high along the Roman Wall. Father Angus had a busy day alongside sons and partners Andrew and Jamie and the capable stockmen both brought great runs of Blue Grey cattle to Hexham in a welcome return to Tyne Green. The Stell Green offering peaked at £1680 with Sewingshields following closely at £1640 with Angus, Andrew & Jamie all very satisfied with their days trading.
Next week will see another sale of top quality store cattle and entries are invited. It is often suggested that ‘West is Best’ but the trade at Hexham proves it is far more profitable to ‘Sell Your Beast in The East’.

Breeding Cattle
In addition to the store sale, the company held their monthly sale of Beef Breeding cattle and offered a good entry which included the second portion of the Birtleyshields herd dispersal on behalf of Messrs Byerley.
A smaller show than that seen in October sold equally well with many prospective buyers at the ringside. Outwith the dispersal heifers and calves £3600 for a sweet Limmy Outfit from Eric Armstrong, Harlow Bower.
This one was followed at £3400 for a Limousin cross Friesian heifer with an Angus calf at foot from Messrs Todd, High Toft Hill and Barry Rayson, Salmonswell took the third top spot at £3300 for a Blue cross second calver with a smart Limousin steer calf.
Incalf heifers sold at the same £3300 for a Limmy due to the Angus bull from High Toft Hill and Messrs Todd sold another, this time an Angus which traded at £2550.
A small offering of in-calf cows were forward from Messrs Braines, West Edmondsley and the big Angus cross fourth calvers topped at £2100 and £2000.
The day was rounded off by a sterling run of stock cows from brothers Thomas and Marshall Byerley, Birtleyshields and the twenty-six outfits with their autumn born calves attracted another good crowd to the Hexham ring. Predominantly younger Limousin first cross suckler cows that were clear of the bull were good to sell and topped at £4050 for the pen leader selling to James Herdman, Edlingham Newtown for a hefty square lady with her heifer calf at foot. Mr Herdman also took the next at £3980, this one with a shapely steer calf at foot and the next at £3800 went home with D & A Livestock, Harrogate.
The Byerley Brothers have a long-standing reputation for consigning top quality cattle to this centre and this reputation paid dividends today with buyers both distant and local keen to vie for their offerings. A solid trade was evident throughout and culminated in an average of £2835 per outfit and a deserved conclusion for yet another suckler herd in the region.

Topping the sale at £302 was a Texel ewe from J Herdman, Edlingham Newtown who also sold ewes at £290 and four at £268.
A pen of 7 Texel x ewes sold at £260 from R Beattie, Hareshaw Allotment.
Suffolk x ewes sold to £202 for 7 from J R Johnson & Son, Tuthill.
Mule ewes sold to £194 for 11 from J Reed & Son, High Eshells. Blackface ewes sold to £130 twice. Firstly for 20 from L Forster & Son, West Nubbock and then from J Herdman, Edlingham Newtown.
Swale ewes sold to £120 for 10 from A & C L Bell, Woodhall.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 6437 Store Lambs to yet another fantastic trade to average all in £120.22 which includes over 2000 Mule, Blackface, Swaledale and cheviot lambs.
The sale topped at £162 from B A & A M Storrow, Willimoteswick for some quality Dutch Texel cross lambs – this home averaged £136.64 which includes 24 Cheviots.
Texel cross lambs reached £145 from W A & M Robson, High Baulk with others to £144 from S & M Pickworth, Dotland Park.
Suffolk x lambs reached £138 from Pallensburn Estate, with others to £137 from J Lee & Son, Agars Hill and W Taylor & Son, Great Bavington.
Mule lambs enjoyed a very healthy trade averaging £123.41 for 948 sold, with 938 selling for £101 or more! Topping at £141 was 13 powerful lambs from T Nixon & Sons, Longlee. This home averaged a stunning £132.46 for 55 Mule lambs. Others to £136 from R G & L A Grieve, Whiteside. Other mentions must go to the Bell’s of Woodhall who sold 4 at £133 and 84 more at £182 and Devonport Farms putting 134 mules in the ring which made £129.
Blackface lambs averaged £101.53 for 784, topping at £131 for a quartet from J R F Pattinson & Son, Hotbank who also sold other pens to £139 and £118. G D Herdman, Edlingham, Demesne sold 70 good sorts to £117. A fantastic 39 pens of Blackface lambs sold at £100 +
Swales reached £111 from R G & L A Grieve, Whiteside. F Johnson, West Shipley sold 30 strong swales to £90. J A I & D J Scott, The Brigg also reached 90 for 45 super swales.
