Store Cattle
A vastly reduced entry of cattle this week compared to last week’s phenomenal Anniversary sale, with a catalogued entry of 226 Store Cattle and Weaned Calves. Incorporated within this week’s sale was the special monthly sale for Native bred cattle. This week’s sale was predominantly native bred cattle with 80% being mainly Angus bred beasts.
This said, a great trade was observed for the store cattle right across the board leaving a great average figure of £2089.40 for both steers and heifers together!
The leading consignment on the day was some big, hefty Charolais cross steers from R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange which sold to £2580.00, £2560.00 and £2550.00. A pair of Angus steers sold to £2480.00 on the day, firstly from RF Rogerson, Harbottle Grange and matched by a fit sort from DA, P Burn & Sons, Aydon Shields.
Highest priced heifer on the day was a Charolais cross from Telfer Brothers, Make-Me-Rich which cashed away to £2470.00. The leading Native bred heifer this week was an Angus cross from RF Rogerson, Harbottle Grange selling to £2010.00.
One of the sale highlights was a terrific pen of 15 well matched 15-month-old Angus cross heifers fresh out of Ingram Valley from Wilson Bros which achieved £1700.00. The same home sold a pen of 6 heifers to a top of £1900.00.
A smaller offering of younger cattle this week which again sold very well and saw a high of £2110.00 for 10-month-old Charolais cross steers from J Herdman, Edlingham Newtown.

A pair of Dutch Texel ewes sold to £250 from J & A Moralee, Hard Riding.

Store Lambs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 6099 Store Lambs to a fast trade, averaging all in £124.41 and the same story again selling over 1000 more than the same week last year. Trade and numbers there is nowhere better to market your stock than Hexham.
Lambs topped at £169 for a sweet Beltex x from R Rutherford, Kingswood. Also topping at £169 was a pair of Beltex x lambs from M & N Gray, Low Espley. Beltex lambs today all in averaged a mighty £140.99.
Texel x lambs peaked at £160 from P Clifford, Lamberton Gardens. An unbelievable 128 pens of Texel x lambs were £128 or more.
Suffolk x lambs reached £158 for 7 thumpers at £158 from H & T V Walton, Settlingstones. 788 Suffolk x lambs averaged £127.83 always well in demand on a Friday.
Mule lambs were keenly sought after, peaking at £124 for 18 from Mr D Collingwood, Intake – this home also sold 17 shapey Texel x lambs at £146. Also at £124 was 20 from J D Walton & Sons, Burnbank. Many deserve a mention in the Mule section today with 14 pens or 314 Mule lambs reaching £120 or more with W & H I Watson, Sanders Close making their first trip to Hexham a significant success selling a pen of 60 at £120.
Cheviot Mule reached £134 for a pen of 40 from J Loder, Upper Chatto.
