Store Cattle
Hexham & Northern Marts at their weekly sale offered a useful entry of 310 head of store cattle which included the monthly special sale of native breeds and comprised mainly of these increasingly popular sorts.
Leading the sale was a super Limousin cross steer at 21 months from Messrs Tulip, Bilton which topped at £2600 and headed up a smashing run from the Alnwick based producers that consigned a round ten for sale and averaged a very worthwhile £2442 per head.
Next in the rankings was the lead native breed beast on the day; a huge Hereford cross steer from Messrs Renner, Yetlington that scaled to £2580 and the same price was also attained for the lead bullock, a Limmy cross from Messrs Herdman, Lunns House, Consett.
Angus cattle always feature highly at Hexham and on this day this class was topped, jointly at £2380 for sizeable black bullocks with less than a month between them – the first from father and son team Brian and Neil Urwin, Lynnshield, Haltwhistle and the second from Messrs Featherstone, Allendale Farm, High Westwood. Messrs Urwin sold a nice run of 8 bullocks to average £2267 and Messrs Featherstone followed with two steers and two heifer sisters that returned at £2255 on the day.
Within the yearling types a number of consignments; both native and continental were highly sought after. Charolais cross calves from James Sinton, White House topped at £2300 for a steer with great potential and averaged £2016 for the Birtley based breeder. The Oliver Brothers Nick & Andrew brought a cracking dozen Limmy cross calves down from Cawfields on The Roman Wall to Hexham and saw £2080 for their lead bullock and an average of £1955 throughout for the twelve sold. The Coquet Valley was well represented by Charlie & Izzy Rutter who, following on from a great trade at the Special March Show & Sale brought another ten well-bred Limmy calves forward and these too sold well topping at £1980 for the lead bullock and reaching a deserved average of £1804 from their Burradon Mains suckler enterprise.
Of the native classes it was the Angus that saw the best of the trade with the annual consignment from Messrs Sutherland, Ross Farm exceeding all expectations topping at £2260 for steers and £2060 for heifers with the entire run of 28 changing hands to average a pleasing £1892 throughout – a lift of almost five hundred pounds per head on the same sale last year.
Messrs Dean, Kirkhouse travelled East along the A69 from Brampton for great reward averaging a mighty £1966 for six black bullocks sold through the Hexham ring that had ascended to a top of £2180. Special mention must also go to Messrs Wilson of Ingram as the long-standing North Northumberland purveyors of the black breed brought forward nine level bullocks at 11 months of age and presented the hill-bred types in one single lot to great effect selling at £1780 per head.
Entries are invited for next week’s sale and should be directed to auctioneers Chris Armstrong – 07808 721957 or Drew Patrick – 07854 361967 or to the main office 01434 605444 by noon on Monday 23rd March.
A reminder that next week’s sale will be the last opportunity to consign cattle to Hexham before the 10th April with the annual ‘Good Friday’ holiday taking place on 3rd of the month.
