Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly catalogued sale of 134 Store Cattle and Weaned calves, an increased entry on the year that attracted entries from as far as Northamptonshire.
All those that consigned cattle were greeted by a great trade throughout. Older forward stores would remain a similar trade to last week’s returns and look a good price compared to the prime market. Leading consignment and prices on the day came from a great run of Limousin, Charolais and Simmental cross cattle from Messrs Reay & Walton, St Oswalds sold to £2480 for a great Limousin cross steer. A very stylish and well fleshed black Limousin bred heifer sold to £2440.00. Charolais steers from the same home topped at £2410.00.
A run of genuine stores from L D Carr & Partners, Upper Higham Lane, Northamptonshire were in great demand and sold very well and saw a high of £2350.00 for Charolais cross steers and £2110.00 for Charolais cross heifers.
A quality entry of younger yearling and weaned cattle this week once again met a flying trade. This was typified by the annual consignment of well-bred Limousin cross steers and heifers from J E Carruthers, Silloans. Bred high up on the Otterburn ranges, these cattle bring a great reputation and were highly sought after and sold extremely well, selling to a high of £2400.00 for a year-old steer! The sole heifer entry from this home was a very sought after 14-month-old black heifer which achieved £2230.00.
Making a return after last week’s exploits was J Browell & Sons, Quarry House with their quality 11-month-old Limousin bred steers and heifers which sold to £2140.00 for a pair of steers.
A pen of four-year-old Angus bred heifers from M J Dixon, The Stobbs went on to cash at £1690.00 whilst a single year-old steer from this home changed hands at £1840.00.

A small show of 198 Cast Ewes & Tups sold to a stronger trade for all classes with less strength in the horned sheep department on the week.
Topping the sale at £265 was a Texel ewe from B D Milburn, Butterknowes.
Suffolk ewes sold to £222 from J E Baty & Son, North Acomb.
Lleyn ewes sold to £2000 twice from G H Blakey, Netherton Northside for penful’s.
Mule ewes sold to £184 for a pair from G Carins & Partners, Broomhall then £183 for 6 from North Acomb.
Cheviot ewes sold to £160 from Cheesebrough & Son Ltd, Buildings Farm.
Blackface ewes sold to £122 for a trio from W & P F Walton, Penpeugh.
Swaledale ewes sold to £121 for 12 from Buildings Farm.
