This weeks sale saw the Easter Primestock show which was judged by Mr M Heliwell, Rochdale and sponsored by Dugdale Nutrition. A nice selection of clean forward today with 25 cattle presented in front of the judge.
Mr Heliwell chose a very sweet and well fleshed Limousin cross heifer from Messrs Graham, Miller Hill as the overall champion. Standing reserve was a very shapey Limousin cross steer from the same home.
The overall champion went on to realise 449.5p/kg and sold to regular supporters B & T Kitson, Five Houses Farm Shop. The reserve champion, the Limousin cross steer achieved the same price selling to the Judge.
Leading the sale and achieving 457.5p/kg twice with a stylish pair of heifers from mid Northumbrian producers H Clark & Son, Paxton Dene. Firstly with a Limousin cross and followed by the first prized British Blue heifer which grossed to £2928.00, both selling to B & T Kitson, Five Houses Farm Shop.
The Paxton Dene team also sold the highest priced beast of the day with a homebred British Blue cross steer selling to £3020.50.

Cast Cows & OTM
Similar numbers forward this week but wow, another serious lift in trade.
With cows becoming scarce everywhere now, another lift was observed with all classes dearer on the week. The entry of 35 cast cows and bulls went on to average a mind blowing 316p/kg!
This week saw our Easter Show for Cast Cows and Cast Bulls. This years show was ably judged by Mr M Heliwell, Rochdale and kindly sponsored by Dugdale Nutrition. Mr Heliwell gave first prize in the cow section to a Pure Blue cow from Jack and Ben Moralee, Hard Riding. The cow went on to cash at 397.5p/kg and £3657.00 selling to Mr O Llyr, Ruthin. No doubt helping fund a few Guinness’ as the lads prepare to perfect splitting the “G” for St Patrick’s Day!
Second prized cow came from I & O Tulip, Bilton, Alnwick which sold to 369.5p/kg.
Again native type cows sold with ease, especially feeding types. Angus cross cows sold to a high of 325.5p/kg from Mr F T Walton, Flotterton.
Leaner feeding types throughout were dearer on the week with plenty selling in excess of 295p/kg and demand outstripping supply.
Cast Bulls sold to a high of 303.5p/kg and £3338.50 for a Limousin from Reay & Walton, St Oswalds.

A very mixed show of bulls sold to 370.5p/kg for a Limousin cross from JE Woodman & Son, Great Chesters. The same home sold a heavy Charolais bull to £3540.13.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1780 Prime Hoggs (an increase of 1167 on the year) travelling from both sides of the border and neighbouring counties to an outstanding trade for a very mixed show which included a lot of Swale, Welsh, Cheviot and other hill hoggs, with a lot of hoggs 28kg to 34kg and all keenly bid for.
Topping the sale at £224 for an excellent Suffolk x hogg was East Cocklaw.
At £220 was Texel x hoggs from J Charleton, Tenter House.
Top ppk at 482.2ppk was a pair of Texel x hoggs from R J Drew, Buckton.
A great run of 90 well fed Swales from N & P Rutherford, Irestone topped at £159 or 378.6ppk and averaged a pleasing £143.66 or 362.4ppk.
