Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly sale of 524 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves and incorporated within this week’s sale was the special monthly sale for native breed cattle.
Trade for older cattle would mirror the finish cattle trade and would be slightly easier on the week and met resistance from finishers. Younger, grazing cattle met a great trade in comparison and would be just as dear as previous weeks.
The show of cattle was very varied throughout the sale with all classes of cattle forward. Leading the sale today was a thumping Angus cross steer from DA, P Burn & Sons, Aydonshields which achieved £2400.00. A sixteen-month-old pure Limousin steer sold towards the end of the sale from L Corbett & Co, Dykehead sold to £2300.00.
A pair of heifers lead the heifer trade today, firstly a very smart and powerful Angus cross heifer was Scots Gap producer, D F Brodie, Chesters which sold to £2290.00. This was then matched by a very smart black Limousin cross heifer from North Tyne regular, J R Robinson & Son, Warksfield Head.
Leading the suckled calf trade was a great year-old Angus steer from M J Stobbs, The Stobbs which realised £2270.00. A fantastic black weaned, Limousin heifer calf from Philip and Fiona Scott, Westburnhope sold to £2220.00.
One of the highlights of the day was the annual consignment of Angus cross and Beef Shorthorn cross, yearling steers and heifers from W S Robson & Co, Yatesfield. This consisted of fifty-seven calves that had been brought up on the top of the Otterburn ranges and sold extremely well and saw a high of £2080.00 for Beef Shorthorn steers and a pen of five Angus bred steers sold to £2000.00. A marvelous pen of twelve well drawn heifers sold to £1600.00.

Topping the trade at £330 was a Texel ewe from W J Scott Ltd, Low Leam who also sold ewes at £300.
Also at £300 was a Texel ewe from J H Emerson, Haggate.
At £295 was a Texel ewe from C & C Farming, Flotterton.
Suffolk ewes sold to £278 for a pair from F T Walton, Flotterton.
Dutch Texel ewes sold to £275 from M N H & M E Robinson, East Alwent who sold 20 to average £253.50.
Bluefaced Leicester ewes sold to £204 for a trio from Messrs Rowell. North Cocklake.

Hexham & Northern Marts held its Annual Show & Sale of Ewes, Shearlings & Hoggs with Lambs at Foot presenting a fantastic entry of 645 outfits of Ewes, Shearlings and Hoggs with lambs selling once again to strong rates of return to a busy ringside of purchasers, with a show very kindly judged by Mr T Wilson, Thursby.

A small entry of Breeding Hoggs sold well, a pen of 30 smart Texel x Ewe Hoggs reached £222.
Ewes and lambs were well cashed, especially older lambs. These peaked at £170 per life from Mr O Harrison, Aimshaugh, who sold 111 lives of White Faced ewes & Shearlings to average a stunning £146.99 per life with the majority being twins.
Mr D Humble, Allergill once again brought a cracking run of Ewes and Lambs selling strong Texel x ewes to £168 and Cheviot Mules to £148.
J Stephenson & Son, West Mill Hills claimed 1st prize best any other pen with a cracking pen of Texel x ewes with twins reaching £160.
D J & J E Lumley, Nookton brought forward a stunning run of Mixed age Mule Ewes with quality Suffolk x lambs peaking at £140 and averaging £128.65 for 113 lives of strong Mule ewes with twins.
A strong show of Shearlings with lambs sold to big rates if return, peaking at £184 from J Patterson, Chollerton Farm. This home averaged £156 for a quality mix of Texel x and Suffolk x shearlings with lambs at foot.
Mr O Harrison’s cracking run of Cheviot Shearlings peaked at £160, rounding off another good day for the Alston team.
Hoggs and lambs sold well, especially stronger quality sorts. Today’s trade peaked at £186 per life on two occasions – both for Rochester & Murrays 2 stunning pens of 10 Mule Hoggs with Suffolk x lambs.
The overall Champions today were from W & J A Longlands, Rusheylaw, wo presented 2 fantastic pens of 10 Texel x Hoggs with lambs, making £180 and £170 for some great sheep.
Other continental hoggs sold to £175 from the Wilson team at Warkshaugh and £172 from W M Reed & Sons, Lands.
Other notable prices were R N Kirkby & Son, Barston Hall whose quality pen of Mules made £170 and Mr D & E Patrick, Longsteads strong pen of Mules at £168.
