Hexham and Northern Marts held its 31^st Anniversary Show and Sale with an outstanding entry of 904 catalogued, consisting of cattle of the highest quality from across the North of England and Scottish Borders.

This year’s pre-sale show was very ably judged by West Country finisher Mr Harry Cobden, Somerset. The show and sale was once again kindly sponsored by Stoneacre Motor Group and Zoetis.

A terrific show of cattle was brought before Mr Cobden with all classes well represented. The Overall winner and the recipient of the Hexham Auction Mart Co. Ltd Perpetual Challenge Trophy was renowned breeders of quality Limousin cattle, A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall with an outstanding red heifer. An absolute peach of a heifer attracted great interest and went on to sell to £3400.00 to B & T Kitson, Northallerton.

The judge took a great shine to the Native class winner, a terrific Angus cross steer and a fine example of the breed. A great black thick bullock which went on to cash away at £2460.00.

The sizable catalogue attracted a fantastic ringside of buyers from across the country who chose to procure cattle of all classes from Hexham. The days sale, after the Champion, was led by Charolais class winner, an unbelievable Charolais cross steer that was full of flesh from the Five Houses team, Northallerton which realised £2860.00.

Hexham regulars G & EA Herdman, Luns House brought a brilliant entry of forward Limousin cross steers that carried plenty of flesh and sold to £2750.00. A further four steers surpassed the £2700.00 barrier from Messrs Herdman and the Five Houses.

A smaller offering of forward heifers compared to bullocks, but these likewise met a competitive trade and sold to a high of £2670.00 for a hefty Charolais cross from R H Thompson & Son, Fitches Grange.

Peter and Trish Gordon, Old Deanham brought their usual consignment of quality cattle from the Cambo countryside with Limousin cross heifers cashing to £2660.00.

SWS Agri, Arnold House made another successful trip across from Carlisle and sold Charolais heifers to £2580.00.

 One of the many highlights of the sale was a very impressive and level run of sixty Angus cross steers from R Green & Sons, Heckley High House, Alnwick. This serious run of 14–16-month-old bullocks sold to a high of £2460.00 & £2420.00 for a bunch of five. This terrific run went on to average £2245.17.

A fabulous run of thirty-one well-bred 13- 15-month-old Limousin crosses from T W Oliver, Cawfields were very sought after and sold very easily and to a high of £2420.00 for steers and £2200.00 for heifers.

Younger stirks met a trade as hot and the temperature within the ring! The younger sub 12-month-old cattle were a great trade and sold to a high of £2280.00 for a 10-month Limousin cross blue from R Carr, Little Bavington.

B Storey, Woodhead enjoyed another great Hexham trade and sold 10-month-old Limousin cross steers to £2220.00.

Leading heifer in this category was a Limousin cross heifer from Reed Partners, Dyke Nook which cashed away at £2160.00.

Again proving being sold late in the day matters not here at Hexham and on the day, the cattle could have possibly gone dearer as the day went on, this was proved by the great run of Limousin crosses sold by Hector & Roger Rutherford, Low Eshells, even being sold post 5pm, buyers stayed and bid eagerly for their cattle. These sold to a high of £2460.00 for steers and £2320.00 for Heifers.

Young Bulls

An increasing number of Young Bulls are now being seen here at Hexham and once again these met a straight and competitive trade and saw a high of £2260.00 for a Black Limousin cross from A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall.

Store Lambs

Hexham & Northern Marts held its Annual Show & Sale of Store Lambs and presented a super entry of 4886 Store Lambs, like every other week selling more on the year, up 1515 this week, and unlike other centres bucking the weekly trend boasting an average of £126.10, up £3.96 on the year.

A big thanks to Rob Carrick who had the difficult task of judging.

Winning the Overall Championship 2 years on the trot was C R Fawcett, Well House. This classy pen of 22 Beltex x lambs sailed to £222 with credit due to the Fawcett’s for producing such fantastic sheep.

Other pens of Beltex x lambs sold to £175 from R E Williamson, Littleburn who averaged £153.80 for 45 stunning lambs cashed. The 3^rd prize pen of 20 from Younger & Stamp, Watch Hill sold to £174. P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope peaked at £167 for 20 with a quality run averaging £163.83.

Texel x lambs reached £165 from J Ridley, Wittonshields, with 20 more at £148, another 28 at £145 and their final 29 at £140.

Suffolk x lambs averaged £131.65 at Hexham today for 731 sold, peaking at £149 for a dozen from Messrs Thirwell, Hetherington. Also achieving £149 was R E Williamson, Littleburn. The 1^st prize pen of 20 from B N & S Urwin, Lynnshield achieved a mighty £146.

Mules were well bid for, with all 698 averaging a pleasing £110.08, peaking at £138 for 7 from P Bell, West Morrison, and the 1^st and 3^rd prize pens of 20 Mules each from Devonport Farms, Sweethope and J R D & J A Short, Ouston reaching £126.

Many more sheep are required weekly here at Hexham to satisfy demand
