Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held their weekly sale of Store Cattle and Weaned Calves, with a fantastic catalogued entry of 505 head drawn from across the North of England, the Scottish Borders and East Lothian.
This week’s entry was of a more commercial type compared with last week’s outstanding show of cattle, however trade throughout remained strong across all classes. Stronger cattle continue to command a remarkable trade in comparison with current finished prices.
Leading the older cattle and topping the sale overall was an outstanding homebred red Limousin cross heifer from J S A Dodds, High House, which achieved £2,680. The same home also sold strong forward steers to £2,660.
G & E A Herdman, Luns House presented their usual weekly consignment of quality Limousin-bred cattle, which this week sold to £2,630.
There was an excellent offering of Charolais cross cattle, which peaked at £2,670 for a tremendous bullock from F T Walton, Flotterton. This was closely followed by the leading beast from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters, achieving £2,660, with others from the same run selling to £2,620.
A smaller offering of native-bred cattle was forward ahead of next week’s monthly native sale. These topped at £2,560 for a thick bullock from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside. A further three cattle sold at £2,500, firstly from the regular Cumbrian consignor SWS Agri, Arnold House with an Angus cross steer leaving, a price then matched twice by regular Hexham vendors T & J W Renner, Yetlington.
- J R Robinson & Son, Warksfield Head brought an outstanding run of strong 13-15 month Limousin and Blue cross steers and heifers which peaked at £2540.00 for a Limousin cross heifer and Limousin cross steers topped at £2300.00.
Young Cattle & Weaned Calves
Young cattle of all shapes and sizes met another cracking trade, once again proving Hexham’s strength for weaned stores of all classes, with increasing numbers of dairy-bred stirks now appearing in Ring 1 on a Friday.
This section was topped by new Hexham consigner A J Brown, Dunston Hill, Alnwick, with a fantastic 11-month-old red Limousin cross steer which realised £2,210.
Another relatively new Hexham customer, Dale Armstrong, Triermain, Brampton, enjoyed a marvelous trade for his run of 8–9 month old Limousin cross weaned calves, which topped at £2,140 and £2,120 for steers, with a flashy heifer selling to £1,980.
Featherwood Partner, Otterburn also achieved £2,120 for 11-month-old Limousin cross steers.
Leading the native weaned calves was F Hall & Son, East Butsfield, with their usual stamp of powerful Angus-bred cattle selling to £2,110.
Topping the weaned heifer trade at £2,100 was a fantastic pen of three well-bred Limousin cross heifers from G H & A Walton, Farnbury, from the tops of Alston.

Cast Ewes
Hexham & Northern Marts sold 648 Cast Ewes & Tups to a buoyant trade with flesh seeing super returns.
The sale topped at £352 for a belter of a Beltex from M NH & ME Robinson, East Alwent whilst the same good home returned a resounding average of £297.60 for 20 sold.
Texels peaked at £350 from Airey Bros, Brownchesters for a thumper of a ewe.
Mules saw a flyer, peaking at £198 from J A Gilson, Heugh Farm.
Horned ewes sold to a height of £148 for Blackfaces from J D Swan, Low Eals, whilst Swaledale’s topped at £138 for a pair from Airey Bros, Brownchesters.
Cast Tups peaked at £270 for a Charolais from A W Wigham, Todhillwood.
Horned bred sorts saw Blackfaces top at £192 & £191 forward from Airey Bros, Brownchesters, whilst the same good home produced the leading Swaledale rams at £168.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 905 Store Hoggs to a simply phenomenal trade that really was “see to believe” with the all-in store average being £145 on the button with purchasers still leaving empty handed.
Topping today at £218 was J Carins, Rouchester with a powerful Texel hogg; this home also sold a pair at £200.
Texel x hoggs peaked at £193 from W & P F Walton, Penpeugh. Texel crosses averaged a pleasing £154.06.
Suffolk x hoggs sold to £184 from Katie Armstrong, Wesley House.
Blackface hoggs sold to £188 for a trio from W S Robson, Yatesfield. C H & S Peart, Hareshaw sold 4 at £179 and averaged £174 for the powerful run. Dudlees partners also sold 13 Blackface hoggs at £157.
Bluefaced Leicester hoggs sold to £185 for a pair from I Potts, Redburn.
Beltex x hoggs reached £180 from P & E B Robson, Middle Horsleyhope.
Cheviot hoggs were well cashed, reaching £184 and a pen of 58 sold at £167, both from F T Walton, Flotterton.
Suffolk x hoggs reached £174 for 16 from D Dixon, Middle Heads. This home also sold a pen of Texels at £180 and averaged £176.83 for 47.
Mules reached £170 from W Gibson & Son, West End Farm.
