Store Cattle
Hexham and Northern Marts held its penultimate sale of the festive period with an entry of 163 Store Cattle and Suckled Calves. A mixed show of beasts forward throughout the sale, which met a trade that would be very similar to the previous weeks and dearer than expected with reduced rates seen previously this week and the falling value of the finished product.
Store steers went on to average a very healthy £2125.05 and saw a high of £2600.00 achieved on two occasions, from L R Carmichael & Son, Berwick Hill. Firstly, for a thumping 31-month Angus cross steer followed by 22-month-old Limousin cross.
Like the steers, heifers also met a great trade throughout and levelled at £1891.43 for a entry that lacked “live weight”, butcher type heifers. These were topped at £2520.00 for a 33-month-old Angus cross heifer from PR & M Arthur, Kirkley March. The Tow Law producers, J Thompson & Sons, Springwell Well brought their usual consignment of quality Limousin bred cattle. These sold to £2460.00 for a stylish red Heifer. Steers sold to a high of £2400.00.
Year old Limousin cross steers sold to a high of £2100.00 from Keith Nixon, Hesleywell. Angus cross stirks from Harnham Hall Farming Ltd, Harnham sold very well and peaked at £1840.00 for a year-old steer.

Suffolk x ewes sold to £219 from J S Urwin & Sons, Dovecote.
Cheviot Mule ewes sold to £171 from J Reed & Son, High Eshells.
Mule ewes sold to £170 twice, firstly a pair from E Metcalf, Fairley then 10 from J S Urwin & Sons, Dovecote.
Blackface ewes sold to £130 for 5 from J N Brown & Son, East White Hill.

Store Lambs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 4741 Store Lambs with a bustling ringside of buyers eager to fill orders.
Topping the sale at £168 was a pen of 40 Suffolk x Halfbred lambs from S Shell & Sons, Brandon, whose usual high standard saw their second string achieve £160 for another 40.
Beltex x lambs achieved a height of £156 for a flashy pen of 10 from C R Fawcett, Well House.
Matching this price at £156 was a super pen of 8 Dutch Texels from E Lishman, Fell Lane House.
A super run of 51 North Of England Mules from R & M J Lee, Harwood Shield reached a height of £128.
Horned lambs saw a pen of 5 Blackface lambs from E & L Fawcett, Sharperton Edge top the section at £118.
