Store Cattle

Hexham and Northern Marts held its weekly Store Cattle and Weaned Calf sale with a catalogued entry of 184 cattle from across the North of England and Scottish Borders.

Trade for the forward stores would meet slight resistance as seen everywhere else, that said, the better end of continental bred heifers sold to a great trade once again. It was a terrific black Limousin cross heifer from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters that topped the sale on the day selling to £2470.00, the same home also sold others to £2370.00.

Three steers sold to the height of £2340.00, firstly a big, thick Angus cross from G & J H Tomlinson & Son, Sunniside, followed by a pair from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters.

The younger stirks and weaned cattle met a fantastic trade in comparison to the older, forward cattle, this being aided by the current flush of grass. These younger cattle topped at £2300.00, one of the very last beasts through the ring, an 11-month-old Limousin cross steer from I Burn & Sons, Grange Houses.

J Browell & Sons, Quarry House consigned a terrific run of 10–12-month Limousin bred steers and heifers which sold to £2140.00 and £2070.00 for steers whilst heifers peaked at £1740.00 twice.

An increasing number of dairy bred cattle are now making an appearance in the Hexham ring and achieving great returns and this observed by a great run of 14-month-old Blue cross heifers from J & E Campbell, Rosebrough, Alnwick which saw a high of £1780.00 and saw a pen of five sell to £1600.00.

Native bred stirks were also in demand and saw a high of £1700.00 for a well put together year old Hereford steer from T & V Bullerwell, Spenside Farm.

With all classes of cattle sold to a competitive ringside, we are actively seeking cattle for next weeks sale.

Please don’t hesitate to contact Auctioneers Drew Patrick 07854361967 or Andrew Hutcheson 07955275403 over the weekend or call the office by 10:30am on Monday morning for cataloguing.
