Prime Cattle
A small but high-quality selection of butcher’s heifers were forward and met a firmer trade. Well-finished Charolais cross heifers from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters sold to 423.5p/kg, grossing £2,697.60. A well-fleshed Hereford heifer from T & D Harrison, Old Potato House sold to 321.5p/kg and £2,314.80.

Young Bulls
An assortment of young bulls were forward, with Black and Whites and Highlanders making up the majority of the entry. Returns exceeded vendors’ expectations, with Black and White bulls from R H Frater, Moorlaws selling to 303.5p/kg and £1,790.65. A Highlander from A Mackinnon, Thornton Park, Berwick sold to 287.5p/kg and £1,696.25.

Cast Cows & OTM
Numbers of cast cattle have begun to tighten, creating strong demand and an excellent trade for all classes forward. Leaner, feeder types once again sold extremely well and were easily cashed. A mixed show of cows averaged a remarkable 295p/kg across all classes with a large proportion of the sale being made up of smaller, hairy hill type cows. This just highlights the strength of the trade that is achieved here at Hexham.
Leading the sale was a classy black Blonde cross cow from Messrs Charlton, Whiteside, which sold to 347.5p/kg or £3,023.25. Close behind, a strong Limousin cross cow from W J Scott Ltd, Low Leam achieved 341.5p/kg and £2,902.75.
The West Woodburn outfit presented a run of five Limousin cross cows (all on check book passports) which averaged 315p/kg and £2,476.12 per head.
Native cows were again very easily sold. A young Hereford cow from T & D Harrison, Old Potato House reached 319.5p/kg. The highest grossing native was a thick Beef Shorthorn cross cow from High Warden Farm Ltd, High Warden, which realised £2,487.55. Overall, native cows averaged 290p/kg.
With numbers tightening and demand strengthening, vendors considering selling cast cattle are encouraged to contact the auctioneers.

Four stock bulls were forward this week and again met a strong trade. A Limousin bull from L Corbett & Co, Dykehead topped the section at 293.5p/kg. The highest grossing bull was a colossal Charolais from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters, realising £3,383.18.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1465 Prime Hoggs to a fierce trade to average 373.8ppk which includes over 500 Mule and Hill hoggs.
Topping the sale at £217 was A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall with some tremendous Texel x hoggs. This home also sold hoggs to £2165 and £214.
Top ppk at 459.5ppk was a sweet Texel x from J Gilson, Heugh Farm – this home averaged 406.5ppk for 35 continental hoggs.
R J & L I Henley made the return from Boroughbridge to Hexham to peak mat £198 or 413.3ppk and average a pleasing £174.60 for 193 Texel x hoggs.
Swaledale Hoggs old to £167.50 for 10 from R M Gascoigne, Miln House with another 10 at £166.50 from J Lee & Son, Morley Hill. 198 Swaledale hoggs sol to average an impressive 344.1ppk.
More prime hoggs wanted each Tuesday to satisfy strong demand at Hexham.
