Prime Cattle
A much larger show of clean cattle was forward this week, with anything showing a bit of style selling to a premium, while more commercial prime cattle met a slightly reduced trade. That said, returning after a long absence from the Hexham prime cattle ring, Messrs W Walton & Sons, Ogle Castle Farm sold Limousin crosses to 409.5p/kg and £2,416.05.
A nice run of well-fleshed steers and heifers from Messrs Reay & Walton, St Oswalds also met a strong trade, with a Saler cross steer selling to R Pearson Wholesale Butchers, Bradford for £2,428.80.

Cast Cows & OTM
An increased entry of Cast Cattle this week met another firm trade, matching previous returns and resulting in a very respectable overall average of 287p/kg for 65 cows and bulls.
Leading the sale was a young pure Limousin cow from D Dixon, Middle Heads, which achieved 359.5p/kg. A & D Proctor, Swarland Old Hall once again showed their usual stamp of quality, selling a big 800kg Limousin cross cow to 345.5p/kg to Mr O Llyr, Ruthin. This cow also topped the grossing charts, selling for £2,764.00.
A strong trade was also seen for Angus cows, with a twelve-year-old, well-fleshed Angus cross from Mr F T Walton, Flotterton selling to 309.5p/kg. The highest-grossing Angus cross cow was a heavy, well-fleshed sort from R Green, Heckley High House, Alnwick, cashing at £2,497.50.
A great run of seven Continental cross cows from J E Woodman & Son, Great Chesters met a fantastic trade, selling to 331.5p/kg and averaging 309.5p/kg.
One of the day’s highlights was surely a breed record Whitebred Shorthorn cow, consigned by J R F Pattinson & Son, Hotbank, with a well-fleshed cow selling to 297.5p/kg.

There was a very mixed show of cast bulls this week, which nevertheless sold well, topping at 289.5p/kg for a Limousin from W & J W Mews, Glendue. The same home also sold another bull to £2,990.93.

Prime Hoggs
Hexham & Northern Marts sold 1589 Prime Hoggs to another great trade for 708 more sold on the year. Once again handy weight hoggs seeing a great trade although 50% of the sale would be 46kg to 76kg.
Topping the sale was a run of exceptional Dutch Texel x hoggs from B A & A M Storrow, Willimoteswick who sold hoggs at £360 (654.5ppk), £280 (424.2ppk) and £250 (396.8ppk).
Staythorpe Farming, Newark brought a run of 340hoggs up the A1 selling to a top of £205 or 445.7ppk.
