Hexham & Northern Marts held their annual New Year Prize Show and Sale of Store Cattle and offered for sale a super entry for the time of year at 675 catalogued head from noted herd-masters from across Northumberland, County Durham, Cumbria and The Scottish Borders.
Prior to the sale the prize show was expertly judged by Mr Chris Anderson, Gloster Hill, Amble and he was presented with a super line up of over twenty-five cattle of exceptional quality. Following the preliminary classes the Overall Champion was tapped out as the phenomenal Limousin Cross steer at 20 months of age from Ian & Anne Hamilton, Claywalls which had caught the eye from the very first class. The tremendously replete steer was a sterling example of a thoroughly modern finishing bullock with growth, length, stature and shape all in abundance which would simply outshine all others within any fattening unit and ultimately as a finished carcass.
Standing as a thoroughly deserved Reserve Champion was the fantastic Limmy cross heifer from Messrs Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill which had earlier taken first place in the younger heifer class. The red and white heifer stood out in her class of eight and went on to gain the Reserve Champ rosette for Daniel Walton from within only his second consignment of cattle to this centre. Sweet headed and with a great outlook the heifer at just ten months of age will, in the fullness of time fulfil either a niche butchers counter display or perhaps be brought out as a breeding animal, the progeny of which will undoubtedly be a sight to behold.

With the formalities of the show taken care of the auctioneers welcomed a full ringside of buyers from across the country and trade quickly settled at a level in-line with the height of the autumn sales and in the main well beyond vendors expectations.
Straight off the bat buyer interest was keen to say the least and the first pen from Messrs Walton, Flotterton saw nine huge Charolais cross steers peak at £2960 for the second prize steer and the load level at £2652 much to the delight of Jimmy Walton, ably assisted as always in the cattle ring by Callum Storrow.
The top priced Angus on the day was another sold early in the sale and this one, a bullock from Messrs Burn, Aydonshields scaled to a deserved £2540 to complete another great mornings trading on Tyne Green for the Hexhamshire based family.
The sale was topped by the Overall Champion from Messrs Hamilton, Claywalls who saw the bullock change hands at £3050 but with the majority of the consignment from the Capheaton based team consisting of heifers these females peaked at £2480 for a hefty Limmy cross at 19 months and the run of 15 of the same levelled at £2244 throughout.
Messrs Walker Bros, Satley consistently fly the flag for County Durham cattlemen at Hexham and this day was no exception. A cool dozen Simmental and Charolais steer were brought north up the ’68 and sold very well to a top of £2520 and an average of £2353 across the board.
The Harrison Family of Peddar Hill have a long-standing history of bringing their well-bred Cumbrian cattle from Longtown to the banks of The Tyne and these are always sought after. Angus and Hereford crosses at 20 months sold well throughout topping at £2400 and levelling well above expectations at £2198 for twenty-five sold on the day.
After a concerted effort in The Scottish Borders a number of new and return vendors chose to travel south to Hexham for this sale and all were delighted with the outcome. Alistair and Andrew Fleming brought a ‘magnificent seven’ well-bred Lim and Simm cross heifers to Tyne Green from Morebattle for the first time and these shapely sorts were greatly fancied amongst the higher end finishers topping at £2580 and averaging £2441 for the pen.
Douglas Willman, manager of Gala Farms, Galashiels made a return trip with 14 square Simmental and Limousin crosses at 20 months and these Borders cattle continue to sell well at Hexham, the best Simmy bullock being chased to £2420 and the run returning at £2140 throughout.
Another first-timer, this one from the village of Gordon, Mr Christopher Connon of Greenknowe Farm was equally rewarded on the day and saw his best three hefty Charolais cross heifers at 18 months knocked down at £2180 completing in fine form a ‘Hutchy hat-trick for Hexham’.
After an absence of over twenty years Messrs Renner, Yetlington Farm returned to Hexham, this time to the store ring and did so with great effect. James Renner and son Robert presented a round ten Angus and Hereford cross steers at 19-21 months of age and their well-grown cattle were well suited to the catalogue catching the eye of a good number of weekly buyers. The bullocks peaked at £2580 for a smart Angus and the run averaged a mighty £2388 for ten.
Geoff Hubbuck is well-known and always highly industrious at Hexham Mart although only occasionally in the sale ring. On this day however he swapped his merchants hat for that of a vendor and proved that rural retail is not his only forte by presenting a smashing run of twenty smart limmy cross bullocks at 18-20 months of age. Many buyers tried but only a handful were successful in securing these sorts from The Rising Sun farm enterprise which scaled to £2600 for a massive red bullock that will finish to a great weight with the entire lorry-load selling well throughout to come back at £2427 and cap a well-deserved excursion into the ring for Mr Hubbuck.
Likewise John Guiry, Town Farm, Glanton is a seasonal consignor to this centre and a name which is one when featured on the catalogue will always ensure cattle of outstanding quality from the North-Northumberland producer. This day saw a brace of cracking red Limmy cross steers at 20 months presented and as always these rose to the top echelons of the trade selling to £2900 for a real ‘belter’ and a pen mate not far behind at £2760.
A shift in age class in the middle of the sale saw over three hundred yearling and younger cattle emerge and with them a whole swathe of alternate purchasers gather at the ringside. As seen throughout 2025 these younger classes sold exceptionally well on the day with buyer confidence almost brimming over to the delight of vendors presenting quality calves so early after the festive break.
The Ballentyne brothers of Cowburn Rigg are another pair that are synonymous with quality cattle and yet again did not disappoint selling steers to £2470 but a heifer far surpassing at £2860 and their pen of a half-dozen cashing at £2598 to complete another great days trading at Hexham.
After the seldom seen ‘triple’ in the show ring Andy Thompson, East Unthank continued his great fortunes and presented another one of the lead consignments of calves likewise witnessing his heifers outperform their steer brothers. The prize winning bullocks topped at £2420 however with one eye on a suckler herd destiny the Haltwhistle heifers flew past to settle at £2850 for the best of the offering and crowning the day for The Thompson family who went home with a great average of £2450 for 15 sold.
Another Haltwhistle herd-master of renown is Willie Weatherson and together with son Stewart these two also enjoyed the best of the trade on the day. Bullocks from the foot of The Roman Wall sailed to £2500 and with heifers chasing at £2300 Emperor Hadrian himself may even have celebrated in The Milecastle with a trade that averaged £2173 throughout for a pen of fifteen.
With rosettes in his pocket Dan Walton had already braved the snow and frost to get down to Hexham and was met with a trade that would melt the coldest of arctic ice as his Alston bred calves hit the ring in the middle of the afternoon. Well-bred and well-presented the run of twenty calves fit the bill without question and attained one of the trades of the day selling to £2650 for a pair of smart black heifers whilst steers followed at £2450 and the pen averaged a worthy £2358 – including a calf at just 5 months of age that sold for a whopping £2200!
Returning to the Hexham ring from high on the Tow Law tops was Billy Robson, High West House and the slippy ‘sixty-eight’ was worth the journey as these County Durham crackers sold well and evenly with bullocks to £2340 and heifers just twenty pounds behind at £2320. A smashing pen of fifteen averaged a very well-deserved £2020 at a well-grown nine months.

Hexham & Northern Marts sold a catalogued entry of 2909 Store Hoggs to another sizzling trade with some buyers leaving short of requirements, with an all in average of £118.76.
Topping at £170 was F T Walton, Flotterton with a smart Suffolk Ewe Lamb who also sold other smart sorts to £152.
Other pure Suffolks reached £162 for a pair from J & J Farming.
Dutch Texel x lambs reached £151 for 8 from E Lishman, Fell Lane, with others to £150 for 6 from J Lee & Sons, Agars Hill.
Texel x lambs reached £150 for 20 strong sorts from Walker Bros, Satley.

Blackface lambs enjoyed a healthy trade, topping at £121 from Quickeningcote Partners.
