St John’s Chapel Opening sale of Store Lambs and Feeding Ewes

On Saturday the 8th of August St John’s Chapel held its opening show and sale of Store Lambs in 2026 offering a fantastic catalogue of 2470 Store lambs and feeding Ewes. A market packed with sheep was met with an atmosphere that remains unbeaten and a strong trade throughout. An overall average of £123.40 was achieved for 1037 more lambs sold on this day last year, although credit must be due to all vendors for putting forward such quality sheep considering the dry weather in the area.

Topping the sale at £172 was a trio of strong Texel x lambs from W Wearmouth, Rosehill this home also claimed the overall champion pen, a quality pen of 10 continental lambs which sold to £152 then selling another 10 at £148 and another 10 at £145 rounding off a good day’s trading for Wearmouth team.

Texel x lambs proved well cashed with 1401 of the 1453 texel lambs selling for £105 or more, next up at £166 was J Bowes, Glenwhelt House who sold 201 lambs to average £121.46 which includes 50 Mule Lambs.

D Collingwood, Intake peaked at £146 for a trio of texel x lambs and a further 7 at £144 and then reaching £134 with strong mule lambs with 51 Mule lambs from this home averaging a pleasing £121.04

SW Pybourne made the trip up the dale to St John’s with some cracking lambs to peak at £148 for 13 and another 25 at £134. F Johnson, West Shipley also made the trip up the dale to sell a pen of 40 well-bred lambs for £145.

D Fletcher & D Coates brought their usual quality run to St John’s to top at £148 with others to £145 and £143 and an eye-catching pen of 40 at £140.

Mule Lambs were well cashed averaging £119.34 for all 238 sold with not a single one below £100. Topping was the reserve champion pen of lambs from R Collingwood, Stewart Shield who reached £140 for a dozen corkers this home also sold 18 more at £119. J Lee & Sons, Morley Hill sold 16 strong mules at £137 with a further 14 at £120. C Hodgson sold 22 sweet mules to also reach £120.

Suffolk x lambs made £148 for 7 powerful sorts from O Harrison, Aimshaugh with other suffolks to £147 from J & C Dent, Longdale Grove.

Beltex x lambs were also easily cashed reaching £152 for the 1st prize pen of 10 from C Everitt Jolly Body who sold 2 more shapey pens of 10 to make £143 and £141.

A special mention must go to Shaun and Jennifer of Hudgill Rigg, Alston who kindly donated a Suffolk x lambs to the Stroke Association charity which went onto make £2000 in total. Generously purchased by Andrew Hutcheson, Ben Haigh, Robert Carrick, William Tindale, James Rutherford, Robert Atkinson, Jack Walton and Dennis Bulman.
